I went back and read the Hollywood Reporter article which has a lot more details. I agree with Disney on this one.

France requires a 17 MONTH theatrical window!!!! A year and a half theatrical release requirement??????

    Then…to quote the article…

“The regulations, which Disney has called “cumbersome” and “anti-consumer,” also limit that first VOD window to just five months. After that, the film shifts to a 14-month, exclusive free-TV window. Only then, fully 36 months after its theatrical debut, can the movie move back to Disney+. That compares to an average window of around 45 days between theatrical release and SVOD bow in most territories worldwide.”

Disney like other American based multi-national conglomerates live in a delusional world where different cultures have to conform to their way of doing things. So France subsidizes their theater industry which a lot of European countries do. If you want to make money there you need to follow their rules, just like you bed over backwards and kiss the Chinese government’s a$$ any chance you get for the huge consumer base any chance you get.

The problem with most American companies is they want their cake and eat it too.

Three years is absurd. After that length of time, anyone who wants to see it will have pirated it and movie theaters won’t make any money anyway. After three years, most movies are completely forgotten and people have moved on to whatever is brand new right now.

Theaters need to improve their experience if they want to get customers back. I recently watched a movie in a theater for the first time since covid and I forgot, they inflict actual ADS on you. They should let people in free if they’re going to do that. Theaters seem determined to commit suicide through stupidity and greed.
