It’s quite clear that the firing was office politics. Chapek was probably threatened because Rice was a legitimate threat to his CEO position, so he stopped him in his tracks before Rice had a chance to build up support from the executives and the Board of Directors.

This play happens hundreds of times in corporations all over the world. It is not unusual, it is also a pity because it means that the top person is not the best one in charge, it is the most politically savvy one.

Chapek did the same thing when he fired Catherine Powell, who was competent, popular with employees, and a total threat to his power. He pasted it over as no longer needing the position, but in her words she was kicked in the teeth and offered a non-line position as what happens to many women near the glass ceiling.

At some point, the board has to be willing to take a chance and bet that money will always be there. Chapek has caused some serious damage to the Disney brand.

    2. j.berdahl

the board should see what is taking place with Chapek, he gets rid of anyone who could take over and run Disney like Walt would.

  2. Byron

The Peter Principle or in this case the Chapek lack of principles.

  3. Greg Panza

I hear he was one of the vocal wokees that strong armed chapek into stupid move. So its a really good start. GO Woke, Go Broke

    1. Laura

I guess you haven’t been to the massively crowded parks lately. The opposite of going broke

    2. AH

So chapek replaces one woke with another?

  4. Marty

We the parents and grands don’t care about Disney parks, products, cruises, tv and movies. We have purged it all. Go woke, Go broke. Disney informed the parents and grandparents that they don’t care about our children and they’re going to indoctrinate them. So We the Parents have “canceled” Disney.

    1. Gus

I wish that was true but the parks are more packed than before, so good luck with that

      1. Greg Panza

Once the biden payments dry up, and Disney starts to rely on the base (That they pissed on) it will show. I used to go 3 to 4 times a year (DVC Member unfortunately) but will certainly limit it, or maybe use RCI/II, but I want to make them feel the consequences of their actions.
What Would Walt Do, you woke fools

    2. S2

Those 200-minute wait times in Disneyland show your boycott is working.

      1. faackanders2

200 minute wait times is nothing to brag about. Get rid of Bob Chapek and bring back Bob Iger! Disney stock is less than 50% off it’s peak!

      2. Bob

maybe not but the 50% drop in share price, the end of Florida tax benefits and and the complete box office disaster Lightyear is, sure is LOL

    3. Nia

      You parents have cancel nothing

      1. Dora

Even within the parks employee morale is low. Spoke with a park employee at length waiting for a show and mentioned how we weren’t sure if cast members were unhappy or if World cast members just aren’t as pleasant as Disneyland ones. He said most employees are very unhappy right now with Chapeks changes and wish Josh D’Amaro was CEO.

        1. faackanders2

Agree, Get rid of Chapek and replace with Bob Iger or Josh D’Amaro. Disney Stock is 50% off its’ peak.

    4. Ann

Agreed, and tired of all the pushing of the woke on us who don’t agree with it. I loved going to the parks and the movies. They use to be wholesome family entertainment. Not so wholesome anymore. Won’t be giving any of my hard earned money to them any longer. Sorry Walt, They have ruined your legacy.

    5. Chip

I had no plans to go to Disney until I saw they was willing to fight with what is right and fight against the political bullies. I bought tickets for my family and we went to all 4 parks in Orlando which were all sold out for the day. No going broke there. Shows that ignorance will always be defeated and love will always win!

  5. Bill Ho

I would love to see disney fail. They have ruined every franchise IP they touch. They deserve to fail

    1. Nia

Disney will never fail with fans like me

  6. Sandra

Disney broke its moral/social contract with American families.
Sorry Disney, but 50% of the population isn’t minority, or LGBTQI+. and you freely admit your TV content & movies will promote those lifestyles to children. They need to fire many many more executives & employees if they want to regain the reputation they lost.

    1. Killroy

Census shows you don’t realize the numbers are closer than you think. 62% Caucasian but that doesn’t cover lgbtq so take that number down to 59% to exclude them from your special group. You seem to be really upset about that 9% underrepresentation.

  7. Terra

If you all hate it so much then stop posting here.
Use your energy for something else 🤦‍♀️

    1. Julian H

Terra whats the point of a discussion platform if you are only wanting to hear from one side?

These people make a good point and this is your only response please, you must try to do better.

    2. Gus

      Liberal bigotry…

    3. Mark

What do you expect from a company that the founder was a racist. The company it self is a joke. The price to go to the fiasco cost a small fortune. Good luck Disney

  8. Jonathan

They started indoctrinating instead of entertaining. Go woke, go broke.

    1. Patti

That’s it. Disney used to be about providing entertainment that was family-friendly. Now it’s more about pleasing every last subset of humanity, even if it means disregarding those who have supported them for decades. Sorry, but we can think for ourselves and spend our money where we aren’t being indoctrinated. So the parks are full? Great. Doesn’t mean we feel sorry about turning our backs on a company that we’ve loved and supported for years. That company turned away from us first and makes no apologies.

  9. Rick

Disney was once in an unparalleled class by themselves. Now they’re just another huckster carnival outfit. Glad our family have the memories from when Disney was worth caring about.

    1. Julian H

Its sad to say but I agree with you.

This bunch of jokers on the board, most likely all of them do not have a clue, going from one disaster to the next, crazy just crazy.

  10. S1

    This but unironically

  11. Mr Wolf

Another likeable threat to Chapeks position being removed despite solid performance? Why is no one concerned about this? I’m tired of how woke Disney has become as well but this is beyond subjective debate. Bob Chapek is acting like a Julius Caesar and executing anyone that threatens him. Only in another decade when the only magic left is nostalgia for price will anyone realize that Disney hasn’t been this bad off since the pre 80s animation revival. Chapek needs to be removed before its too late.

    1. faackanders2

Agee, Get rid of Bob Chapek and bring back Bob Iger! Disney stock is less than 50% off it’s peak!

  12. Frank

It wasn’t Dana Walden who promised 50% would be from the LGBTQ+ community as stated in this article, it was Karey Burke.

  13. FT

Very happy with our great times at Disney seems like a long time ago.
Now its DWD “Done With Disney”
for all our family and allot of out friends with their continued BS…. so sad.

  14. James

Chapek is consolidating power and protecting himself. Walden is actually a positive direction, considering her embrace of inclusion. None of this has anything to do with a woke Disney, especially since Disney has been vastly rewarded for doing the right thing by including all. Attacking Disney has really PO’D the American people. The parks are fuller than they’ve ever been.

  15. CColeman

Disney needs to fail over and over. It is dead to me

  16. Manny

Awwww more bad news for Disney. Finally, they are bringing a smile to my face again! Keep your children safe, keep them away from any and every Disney venue!

    1. Juneteenth Andy

I saw the woke writing on the wall and sold all my $100 Disney holdings at $190 a share. Let’s see…(checks latest stock quotes)…. Yeah, woke is dope, Bro!

  17. Bob

Soon as his big companies that think they’re powerful companies need to start mining their own business and tend to their own business everyone’s this is a free world people have a right to their opinions big companies need to keep their mouth shut
