These multi billion dollar corporations do not care about the staff.. The managers at Disneyland were on the lower spectrum of IQ.. Selfish and a many got away with cussing like Tommy grave yard manager Anna with sexual harassment of female employees and other the would ridicule cast members daily .. . Their is stress put on castmembers with long term ailments.
I’d rather they not show up if they are sick but clearly companies are so desperate for cash and forcing employment that they would risk the health of their staff and even their customers. God forbid a part time worker gets the flu and forces themselves to work because Disney won’t give them a reasonable amount of time off and they get other people sick.
Giving an employee enough time off to get well is not going to negatively affect anyone except Disney losing cash. Pitiful.
Disneyland California is not a good place to work.the only reason I worked there was the benefits. The only reason I stayed as long as I did (7yrs.) Was the cast members i worked along side of. Managers never had your back and always looked for fault.3rd Shift Manager Anna was a bitter woman, who played favorites with the cast. If you weren’t on her side you were put under strict scrutiny. The Disney way is unfair and totally unfair to the cast member who works their tail off every night.
I worked 50 years full-time. Most I ever got was 5 sick days per year. A doctors excuse was needed if longer and could use vacation time to cover time off if needed more. Only allowed to be late for shift 3 times, then 3 days unpaid time off up to 5 times late, then released.(fired) this was union represented work too. Retired now, got a great pension
So, because you were treated this way doesn’t mean it’s set in stone. Things do change. So, enough of the “in my day” because it makes most folks just shake their heads.
Disney fired my daughter who worked her ass off and only to be suspended with no warning then fired. They killed the magic for her that she loved and dreamed about her whole entire life. We will never look at Disney the same again. The happiest place in the world is not so happy after all. Not to mention the serious rat issues they have at all the restaurants. These rats get into the food that’s 20 bucks it’s ridiculous and we are boycotting Disneyland Resorts.
I’m sorry NO ONE gets fired for no reason. NO ONE. There’s always a reason. You may not agree with it, think its a tiny issue, or not know but there is a reason. Grow up. It’s a job. Get a new one and move on with your salty life.
In the food department even if you bring a hospital/doctor signed note with the fact of the illness and how they are not permitted around food. You will still be written up and threatened to be fired.
All that theme park food being touched by sick people yummmm!
I suppose Disney wished they had the new policy in effect during the original Covid outbreak? Yes, people should in general show up and be on time for work. But, overly harsh attendance policies are a form of oppression too. Do Disney patrons really want employees working while sick and spreading any virus to them? What about people who aren’t technically disabled but have medical conditions? Yes, FMLA is still available but the rules are restrictive and sometimes complicated and arbitrary. Disney has forgotten that there are currently more jobs than workers available or willing to work. The workers have the advantage and Disney can hardly afford a labor dispute or strike. Hopefully cast members will stand up to this workplace brutality and unreasonable oppression. These types of attendance policies serve only corporate greed and the egos of management? Whatever happened to simply asking for a doctor’s release if you were sick after a few days? Cast members should just say no!
They are already short staffed…so whats the difference at this
Point? Either you work and have income or you dont work and apply for all the freebies you can get from the government- hopefully you have some pride, even when you have the sniffles!
It’s not first or fifth gear … I personally hate how 1 sick employee can cause multiple others to get sick when it was preventable. Staying home because of sickness doesn’t equate to Reagan’s “Welfare Queen” narrative. Not at all.

You are a little “special” aren’t ya? I bet you take advantage of government programs as well. Perhaps medicare? Would you be willing to give that up so the feds can save a few dollars each year and not have to pay for your medical care? No need to answer as we all know what the reply will be.
Glad you like snot burgers, Einstein. Civilized people do not. Also, it’s worth noting that the vast, VAST majority of people on welfare are poor rural whites in red states. You know, Republicans.
If they are so short staffed, why are they instituting a policy that will cause more people to get fired, or to quit because of this policy?
For people here saying “just show up for your job”- that is all well and good, but please don’t come to work sick. If you aren’t sick, go to work, although I have no issue with a mental health day from time to time. Also, things happen-your car breaks down, you have a plumbing emergency or something at home, kid gets sick, etc.
In the article, you refer to the “ongoing COVID pandemic.” I think one of the causes of the policy changes is the understanding that the pandemic is over. We understand this clearly in Florida. It’s time for California to enter reality.

Covid is hardly over. In fact, we are currently experiencing another surge. It’s just not showing up because the CDC changed the algorithm. Just like Disney, they care more about money than people. Anyone who thinks the pandemic is over is either lying to themselves or out of their mind. As a certified infection control nurse, I call BS.
If Disney really wants to go through with this new attendance policy then they really need to rethink forcing employees to work mandatory overtime six day weeks every week. I know some employees that have been on mandatory overtime six day weeks for over a year now in Orlando. They can’t even take a day off to go to a doctors appointment without getting in trouble. This is ridiculous especially in the roles of transportation those employees are exhausted which becomes a safety hazard
Florida’s government acted as though COVID never really existed…the state and its tourism industry was back in business within 4 months of most things shutting down, way before vaccines were made and widely available…I certainly would not have visited a theme park, let alone work in one before i had a chance to get vaxxed, and I’m very thankful that when California theme parks (mostly the mouse) tried to strong-arm the CA governor to allow them to reopen in summer of 2020, the governor said, not now, its too soon to allow large crowds to form. Welcome to the real world, where having a job actually means taking on the responsibilities of an adult life! Complaining because you can no longer call out 25 times a year?? Holy crap!

Can you actually call working at a child’s theme park an adult job, though? It’s like fast food, it’s meant for teenagers except for the managerial positions.
I honestly don’t know why you guys leave the comments on. Then again, the old age pensioner brigade that listen to random crap posted on Facebook posting their opinions here is funny stuff.
I’m sorry but, if you can’t do the job, find another job. Employers shouldn’t have to hire a whole bunch of “on-call” employees or overwork some employees because others can’t show up for whatever reason. You say “not fair” for the one who needs off but, it’s not fair to everyone else who has to pick up the slack. It’s NOT unreasonable for employers to want workers who can show up reliably.
In the food department even if you bring a hospital/doctor signed note with the fact of the illness and how they are not permitted around food. You will still be written up and threatened to be fired.
All that theme park food being touched by sick people yummmm!
Until no one shows up and then they are really up crap creek without a paddle. I’m not sure why Disney would want to make it harder to hold on to employees in the current environment.
I do not believe alot of people posting realize that many cast members are probably as old if not a fair bit older than they are, working at the parks to get some additional income, maybe something to do other than rot at home, have something nice for the grandkids. But no, they’re all apparently young strapping bucks barely in their twenties that don’t know responsibility.
I’m an outsider. Never worked for Disney but I have taken my kids there plenty. I mean A LOT!
The last few times I have told myself “never again” and this last time will stick. Disney cares about 1 thing and 1 thing only …. MONEY, CLEARLY NOT PEOPLE. I have no doubt this attitude is also for employees, not just guests
Where’s the problem with this? It’s pretty typical of most employers policies. If you’re a good worker and don’t abuse the system you have nothing to worry about.
In the food department even if you bring a hospital/doctor signed note with the fact of the illness and how they are not permitted around food. You will still be written up and threatened to be fired.
All that theme park food being touched by sick people yummmm!
I don’t think it’s typical at all. I’ve never heard of a business having only 3 sick days. And Disney is a large corporation where the theme parks make a lot of money and sometimes float the other divisions. (Not during pandemic of course)
Decades ago Disney had more people apply than they needed. There were waiting lists. It can’t be that way now because they are saying they’re short staffed. Who decides to make working somewhere harder when they don’t have enough staff in the first place? They’ve gotten rid of so many of the perks that made people accept the low salary and tough customer service–what kind of employees will they even be able to get in the future? It also makes me tend to doubt that they really can’t find employees if they are so willing to fire people. They may be operating short staffed just because it’s cheaper. Certainly not to improve guest experience!
I would be curious to know what caused this policy shift, they must have some logic behind it. Disney has always been bad to work for when it comes to cast/service people, so not a shocking change.
I was a CM twice at WDW, once as a College Program CT and later as a regular full-time with the Vista-United subsidiary. I had different rules but I know my colleagues at the parks often only had to call in about an hour (sometimes as little as 30 minutes) to excuse an absence. Granted they had to be able to reach someone and that depended wildly where they worked but they knew that anyhow. Is DL in California that much different? Granted this was a while ago but things got better for WDW CMs not worse over the years.
All that being said all my other employers would have fired me with even only one unexcused absence when I was working jobs that paid hourly.
It’s not likely this will go into effect unless the union members sign off on it, which they are not likely to do unless Disney is offering something sufficient enticing. With that said, I suspect this is being done because there are many cast members who do not do their job, and the union makes it almost impossible to fire them. The exception is the points system, which is very difficult to get around. This will make it easier to get rid of the bad apples, if it goes into effect.
Really easy to spot the folks who have never been CMs and have no idea how shift assignments work… and how little the pay is for most (especially when compared to the California cost of living).
I’ve talked to CMs in California and let me tell you, the burnout is real. Imagine if 25% the people on your shift are being “mandatory extended” to close every day. And that’s 5 to 6 days a week. Now imagine, that getting worse to the point it’s closer to 50% some weeks. And it doesn’t seen like the company is trying very hard to fill those gaps either. It’s Disney’s motto: “Don’t fix it. Just make it work”.
I Remember hearing something like that I when I worked for Disneyland & DCA in Anaheim🤣🤣🤣🤣Try working Back to Back shifts with MAYBE 3 hours sleep somewhere in between. It was Horrible
Seems like kind of a silly change to make now with hiring new employees being so difficult as it is. Why as a company would you want to make it harder to keep people? Sure they can try to make the remaining CMs take extra shifts or work more hours but I bet that just pushes more people out the door once they quit too.
Ok employees…you know you have options right? Use your feet and go somewhere else if you don’t like the new policy.
It is an employees market right now so use that to your advantage!
I can understand both sides of this having worked as union employees, non union employee, union manager and non union manager.
Honestly…there isn’t anything outlandish in this policy. It is pretty consistent with other businesses. And yeah, all businesses are having a though time getting employees to show up on a regular basis.
Alot of companies have policies like this. Some even tougher.
Only people that need to worry are those that have no work ethic and feel the can always walk in late. I do not see a problem with requiring people show up to work.
Always heard that Mickey was a “dirty little RAT”! Too expensive on guests, and too deadly on cast! Don’t ever mention Walt, by the way. They’re quick to remind you that ” he’s not here anymore!”. Greed 101!
Disney employees,
Welcome to the reality of performanced base recognition. If your union can make a stand the more power to you. In the REAL world, if you have 3 unexcused absences you qualify for termination without qualifying for unemployment benefits. Boo hoo
I was terminated because of Disney’s point system. My first job, fresh out of high school. I had to ride with my parents because we only had one car and the buses didn’t run as early as I needed. My shifts started at 6am most days, and my mom needed to drop off my step-dad before heading to Disney. I was terminated after a 13 hour shift, on my 90th day of probation, because I was ONE minute late too many times. During orientation they said Disney had a grace period, but failed to mention it was for clocking in early, not late. I would get dropped off and would RUN to the computer to clock in, getting to work immediately after. I NEVER received a notice, or was talked to about it as the points stacked up. Management did not have my back, they just wanted to drop me as soon as they could before my probation period was over.
