That was a fever dream. He saw the toy in his dream because cap had just hit him in the head with his shield.
The whole thing was a dream not a memory.
Spider-Man origin is set in stone and is a moral lesson. “With greater power comes greater responsibility”.
That was the iconic lesson Peter Parker learns following the death of his uncle. Retconning the origin removes that lesson and cheapens everything Stan Lee put into creating Spider-Man.
It’s clear that Marvel comics is going down the tube and it’s becoming an insult to Stan Lee’s legacy.
There were heroes before spider man so spider man is unoriginal and uninspired now… The mental gymnastics to come to that conclusion are worthy of a gold medal.
This is does not affect the origin at all. Spiderman was never the first superhero and his idea from the beginning was not original. In Amazing Spider-man #1 he tried joining the Fantasic Four as they were already a superhero team before he got his powers.
I believe I can see where someone may think it cheapens the idea of Peter’s origin story, but I don’t believe that is the case. Bring from New York hevwas bound to hear of the story of Cap at some point in time. It’s not like the existence of a costumed superhero was new to him. I believe instead it just adds a layer of depth to his relationship with his uncle, that it was his uncle that helped shape his character even more than was previously thought. Just my 2 cents. Thank you for the article! Keep it up! Always a great read.
It isnt even the first time his origin had been described as having Captain America influences. During the 1990s flashback -1 issues Uncle Ben provides Peter with his old comic books featuring the Star Spangled Avenger. No one had problems there. It was another positive influence Peter’s late uncle had on him. Are we to expect that Peter came up with the costume idea without any kind of outside influences like TV or comic books?
