The entire point of RotJ was Sidious setting up a scenario where Luke’s refusal to draw on the Darkside is the very thing that is leading to the deaths of his friends and the destruction of the Rebel Alliance as the leaking of the second Death Star’s location was done intentionally. The entire final battle was set up to turn Luke so that Sidious could gain a more powerful apprentice
Vader’s role is to deny Luke any form of aid or succor to show him that his faith in his father’s ability to be redeemed was misplaced. Every second Vader gets in the way of Luke striking down the Emperor he is responsible for the death of more of his allies and the increasing likelihood of Han and Leia’s death on Endor
After struggling with this dilemma and ultimately managing to reign in his emotions, the final gut punch from Vader is that Luke failed to hide Leia’s identity and has put her at risk through his own inaction as Vader threatens to kill him and force Leia to join the Darkside instead. Luke gives in for a brief moment as he does in TLJ but ultimately realizes that acting on his rage and anger to strike down his father and the Emperor will only continue the cycle and throws down his weapon
It’s the core of Star Wars and the Saga as a whole. And Johnson has Luke repeat that mistake as if he’d never gone through such a crucible and come out the other side singed by his brush with the Darkside but stronger and more certain for it
Why is this being brought up again? Rian’s vision screwed up Luke’s arc and grossly misused the characters that should have transitioned to the trilogy finale… He could be the most ardent fan, but his film is by far the worst of all SW films even below Battle for Endor and Caravan of Courage… The only redeeming scene was the destruction of the fleet… other than that, a waste of time and resources that could of been better used when all the cast was still alive…
Rebecca’s article appears to base it’s position on a few cherry picked posts. I’m not sure that the other camp has done a better job (although my leanings are to that side) due to a lack, so far as I’m aware, of concrete data on general opinions.
Rian doesnt understand human psyche, warfare, tactics, strategy or basic storytelling.
Its just a fan erotic tale written by a submissiv moron who has a fetish about being dominated by women based on his own guilt for being a bad human.
Wich is why all the male goes through that arc.
Even Luke.
This is why Star Trek will always be better than SW. Trek may have had bad movies – notoriously Star Trek V – but even Spock was never made to suddenly become more human and violate everything that he was even in the Reboot.
Star Trek? Really? The writing is why Luke’s character became a recluse and a coward. Your moronic idea that Star Trek is superior for that reason shows why Trek fans have ZERO idea of what decent Sci-Fi is and how it’s written. Go play with your ears freak.
If you make a movie and the director has to explain the story behind the story for the movie to make sense, it is not a good movie or story…
Also, the whole Diad thing was another cheap shot at Luke Skywalker but in Legends. One could argue that the whole concept was stolen from the idea of Luke and Mara Jade and their dynamic.
I always appreciate Rebecca’s voice in these articles. She takes care in representing all fans, not just fans who are like her. I think that’s why she’s become so prolific at writing about Star Wars subjects lately. Please keep up the great work!

No it’s just a bad, disjointed mess of a movie with an incoherent plot and direction that goes nowhere.
Not to mention is a terrible Star Wars film.

Yeeeah, I don’t agree with this. 🤣
