  1. Love Awkwafina! She is what you see and that is awesome! Great actress as far as I am concerned

    1. Steve

The world will start to spin again once everyone knows one simple truth… Nobody gives a F how you feel so stop being a baby about. Cancelling… SMH

      1. Ez

        Amen Steve…

        1. Geo

So let me try to understand. Black people have an accent? Theres a way to talk black? Slang is universal, you can go to poland and hear slang. People need to just stfu

          1. Jess

Lol y’all are so racially illiterate but pls keep hoping each other’s uninformed opinions.

      2. Tomas

        Who? Black people?

        Racist much?

    2. Stuart

Absolutely no problem with a great actress like her playing any part. No interested in this woke, snowflake cancel culture nonsense

      1. Tomas

Uh huh. “Cancel Culture” is an invention of the Reich Wing. No? Here’s a sample list of liberals, minorities, companies and even conservatives canceled over the last 100-some years:

        Abolitionist Cassius Marcellus Clay
        Callie House
        Eugene Debs
        Canada Lee
        Nina Simone
        Billie Holiday
        Jane Fonda
        John Lennon
        Ellen “degenerate” DeGeneres
        French fries (“freedom fries”)
        Dixie Chick’s
        Colin Kaepernick
        Eric Reid
        Eli Harold
        Nike shoe burning
        Keurig machine smashing
        Starbucks mug smashing
        Penzey’s Spices
        NFL (“football vs. patriotism)
        NASCAR
        Kellogs
        Beyonce
        Target
        Gillette
        AT&T
        Apple
        Macy’s
        Michelle Wolff
        Dallas Morning News
        Arizona Republic
        Paul Krugman
        Karl Rove
        Rich Lowry
        Charles Krauthammer
        Jonah Goldberg
        Millions of voters (suppression)

At the same time, the snowflake victim culture of the right wing cries over being “canceled”…some examples:

        Josh Hawley
        Jeanine Pirro
        Ted Cruz
        Marjorie Taylor Greene
        Donald Trump
        Tom Cotton

All of then have one thing in common: they are Reich Wing media darlings, claiming censorship and “cancellation” while making millions as dangerous influencers.

You’re such hypocrites, simultaneously boasting about the audiences you have, the influence you have while claiming you’re “victims” Don’t look now, but YOU’RE the snowflakes. You don’t hate cancel culture, you hate the repercussions of spewing bigoted crap & disinformation. You hate responsibility.

        1. Funbob

Well said. I just don’t like her because of the way she speaks and lacks professionalism. She would be nobody if she was a he.

        2. Jay

If you think that cancel culture started with or even is evident in the right wing at all you are not only seriously misinformed but ought to seek out professional help due to your complete detachment from reality.

        3. Shayina

Ha cancel culture is a cancer. For God’s sake, we need to stop giving the stage to these whiny babies with nothing else to do. Just let people be happy and succeed so you can do the same too, stop being so bitter.

      2. Heartbreakerninja

This cancel culture has got to stop. It’s so ignorant.

        Leave this awesome Lady alone.

  2. Zfoml

So they’re mad cause she sounds black? Sorry, didn’t know skin pigment had an accent.

    1. yea it do but you do know its not black folks thats saying something

      1. Tenisha Phillips

Exactly!!! And I hope she knows that. She’s great in everything she does.

      2. Sean Faraday

A blaccent is not a thing anyhow. An accent is developed by your surroundings anyway and where you grew up. If not we would all sound the same.

    2. Melissa A Burns

When we as “black people” talk like that, we aren’t white enough. She can speak like that and get away with it. And skin pigment is everything to white people. We are either too black and ugly and not white enough. Or just light enough to not be a problem and be tolerated in society. Skin pigment gets us profiled. She can talk, dress, and act like us but to really be in our shoes, she’s wants no part of that.

      1. Jet Black

Spoken like an upper-class white chick who is pretending to be black. Fail.

        1. Tenisha Phillips

I agree cause she’s not white so stop it. This girl ain’t “talking black” that’s how she sounds of you ever watch her movies she sounds exactly the same in EVERY MOVIE

          1. CcCc

If you READ the article, you see that is the complaint. She
“Has heavily used the accent in prior projects” or something to that effect. Whether she’s white or Asian, should not be a factor. Sorry if I misunderstand.

        2. Vance Au

I think it’s admirable that she doesn’t want to be portrayed and play as a stereotypical asian accented role. It makes sense.

      2. Wayne conn

Sorry but thats a generalization. In my opinion, no one color owns any kind of talk or hair style,etc.. Those are just more things people use to divide us. We are all people, humans, we all have the same love, passion, pain, hopes and dreams. We as a whole need to stop the BS and come together as one. As one people’s. Spread love.

        1. Noneya

Yeah, less about skin color and more about the culture you grow up in. White people that grow up around black people will tend to talk like them and vice versa. Same reason i can talk to a southerner and start talking like them afterwards. Our bains mimic what we hear. May not just be am accent but certain words as well. People need to grow up and stop being so offended by everything.

      3. Loz D

My skin is white. But skin color isn’t a big deal to me. When you generalise any group, you become part of the problem. People are individuals, regardless of their skin or any other category you or anyone else tries to group them by. Understand, it is you creating that group, not the people you are grouping. This applies to everything in life.

      4. str1d3rx109x

…She is from NY…she has a NY accent, style and grew up around it in school. It’s simply how she talks. Please stfu.

      5. Peabody

“Skin pigment is everything to white people”

You sound like an ignorant racist who has zero friends outside of your own skin color.

      6. Adam

Wherever you live you should move. This is a horrible way of thinking and definitely isn’t indicative of the whole country.

      7. Nunyer

Skin pigmentation is NOT everything to “white people”! What you fail to understand is that the “white people” you lump together based on their LACK of pigmentation is made up of many races and cultures with many languages, accents, dialects and diversities! Maybe YOU need to learn to stop judging based on skin color and judge people by the content of their character! “White people”, referring to the majority of course, aren’t the ones being racists in this day and age! If all you focus on is skin color, skin is all you will see! Awkwafina did a great job. I know people of many levels of pigmentation with blaccent! It is real life speech in particular areas! So get over it. I’m sorry that hundreds of years ago blacks in Africa colonized other blacks and sold them into slavery. It happened to whites too! Just ask an Irish person about it or better yet go visit the museum that has the history of the first ever slaves in the USA. A little hint, they were white!

    3. Chani

I really enjoy Awkwafnina and have for awhile now. Maybe I’m too old to be relevant but she’s fun to watch. I am hella white to the eye but grew up in a very diverse and poverty stricken place so maybe I’ve got some “accent”, but I guess no one cares cos I ain’t famous 🤣🤣

    4. Joe

I never follow personal things in stars, I enjoy their acting. She was awesome in Raya, great in this too.lol. I see a comedy side of her which people need. MEDia stinks, I don’t listen to it much but this showed up lol.

    5. Cc

      Uhmmm… Surely you’re joking?

    6. Jerome Maida

There was nothing “dominant” about “Shang-Chi’s” box-office. Stop being such a shill.

  3. CR45H 0V3RR1D3

I have yet to see an example of someone actually being “cancelled”. I mean, the twitterverse may get it’s panties in a bunch for a bit, but when all is said and done, I can’t recall one person actually losing their career over anything anybody has said about them on social media. 🤷

    1. Yoda

      Shane Gillis

      1. Eliud

If you’re thinking she’s doing a “blackaccent” then chances are you’re the racist one.

        1. Selah Eric Spruiell

I totally agree with you, despite your dog whistle about “Woke Snowflakes.” “Woke” simply means that one is “aware”, that one is not asleep. It is the modern equivalent of “Hip.” Which simply means that one knows what is going on. The Right’s use of the word “Snowflake” is laughable and reveals more about their hurt feelings than ours. As for the use of accents, we all assume regional dialects according to where we live and our culture. Awkwafina is an incredible and funny personality. She should speak anyway she wants to.

          1. NunyerNunyer

Actually, “snowflake” is more referring to the lack of substance behind what people are supporting or rather the lack of knowledge of what is the actual truth of what is going on! “Woke” is not the new “hip”, it’s more like the new “valley girl” all bark with no true substance. Sorry but the “woke” crowd that the “right” as you call them, speak of is the ones who refuse to hear anything but their own opinions retorted back at them. It’s the exact opposite of “being aware”!

    2. ButchQween

Johnny Depp. Seriously he’s already been canceled out of 2 movies because of heards lies

    3. Jay

Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many people cancelled, either for wrong reasons, or mistakes in their past that they own up to.
Too many people don’t seem to want to give people a chance to do better.

    4. BT

      Gina Carano ring and bells?

      1. Me

        She’s working

        1. Jet Black

Not because of Disney. Daily Wire,a conservative organization, hired her because her cancellation was wrong, and they built a movie project around her.

          1. Michael Moore

Cancel Culture must be stopped. Forgive and forget is a better policy than holding a grudge against someone for their past. Personal responsibility must be upheld for current and present actions. Love one another.

      2. JC

she made idiotic comments that reflected negatively on her employer so they fired her, that’s not cancel culture that’s just life

        1. evian frinker

          ditto.
shes an awful actor too 🤣

    5. .A.S.

Gina Corano – cancelled from The Mandalorian because her political views are incorrect apparently?..

    6. Brook

Roseanne Barr lost her career due to liberal cancel culture.

      1. Andrew Heenan

Not really. She lost her career through her own unpleasant comments. Which she has admitted.

      2. Selah Eric Spruiell

Rosanne Barr lost her career because she made racist statements.

        1. Richard

Roseanne said a woman looks like a character from the planet of the apes. Valerie Jarrett looks racially ambiguous. You could assume she’s white, black, Asian or Hispanic. But she does look like a chatter from the planet of the apes movies. Nick Cannon said white people have a melanin deficiency that makes them evil. He had no similar repercussions.

    7. Janey

      Senator Am Franken.

  4. Madvillainy

To me it sounds like she smokes 3 packs a day. If that’s what she sounds like naturally, what’s the big deal?

    1. Ed Kowalc

I believe that if someone owns their mistakes, and is not just offering “lip service”, we all should let them move on. After all, that may be the real meaning of “judge not, least ye be judged”.

      1. Please, she is just talking normally. Not ONE of you brought up Nora F Queens! Dmases…

        1. Jan

I agree. People swear they haven’t heard Asians who grew up in Long Beach, Houston, or Queens to talk before. We learned English hoopin and jump roping at the park with our neighbors. AKA fam.

      2. Cc

“We should just LET them”… How powerfully privileged of us. WE should not have this piwer to begin with. Which is why we set up institutions a hundred years ago to prevent it. Everyone is chafing to have their stance be the RIGHT stance. It’s not, get over it.

  5. Das

Yeah she said she’s not for accents but clearly changed her mind. So what?

  6. Anubis83

What accent? She sounds the same in Shang Chi as she always does. I think the Twitterverse forgot she’s actually from Queens. Races don’t have accents. People do based on where they grow up and how their peers spoke. I think, once again, this was a prime example of Twitter over reacting. Twitter is not the real world, and Awkwafina is a good actress. I’ve enjoyed her work for a while, and wish her many more years of continued success.

    1. Cw

Thank you…She sounds like herself to me

    2. Lisa Lyons

Agree 💯! She sounds like a New Yawker and that’s fine by me. Love her!

      1. Hypa

Agreed. New York has so many skin colors and nationalities, mixes and variety, and we all have a New Yorker accent. It has NOTHING to do with race. She’s… INDIVIDUAL. Which is what NYC is all about. She has a voice.

  7. Dust

I hope she plays plays Katy, Renfield’s zany best friend.

  8. I thought she was fantastic! I will be very angry of she does not appear in a future Marvel film.

    1. Yoda

      Awkwafina’s gay dude

      1. Susan

So? She was awesome in the film. What does he securely orientation have to do with it?

      2. Begone

This is an extremely stupid comment. Good job.

    2. Yoda

      Why

  9. BK SILVA

UNAWARE OF ANY CANCEL OR BOYCOTT. MCU FANS IN THE THEATERS SUPPORTED THE FILM & CAST BY BREAKING ATTENDANCE RECORDS. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OF AWKAFINA’S FILMS AND CONSIDER MYSELF A FAN! WHETHER AS A LEAD OR SUPPORTING ROLE, SHE ENTERTAINS & INFORMS. THOUGHT HER ACCENT WAS SIMPLY “NEW YORK” OR PART OF HER COMEDY – NO WORRIES. I LOOK FORWARD TO HER FUTURE WORK.

  10. Mark T

I honestly thought she was supposed to be a New Yorker (the irreverent use of “ma” instead of any longer firm). But when you realize they are in San Fran, it makes less sense. But given that she grew up in QUEENS, NY, it makes a lot more sense. She was going metro urban, so she spoke in the tones she grew up around.

Ppl are so sensitive of offending anyone who isn’t cracker-colored (can’t even go Caucasian since that applies to all folks from the Middle East, as well) that you MUST fit someone else’s predefined view of how YOU should be…. Which is very prejudicial in its own sense.

I’m glad she’s continually finding new roles because I enjoy her work!

    1. Bonique H.

      👆👆👆Perfect example of racism

    2. Ugh

      Which cracker? Saltine or Ritz?

  11. Lemon

How is this an Asian American cast if Simu Liu is Canadian?

    1. ButchQween

Technically still American. Canada is still part of North America

    2. Conan le'Barbarian

Canada is in America you nonce.

    3. Look at me

The people criticizing your question are a certain kind of special, Canada is part of the North America continent, to even further show their stupidity maybe they care to explain the term Canadian Americans while those that live in Canada are just called Canadians. Sure they feel smart now

    4. Cc

Because USA does not equal America. It’s IN America, it’s OF America, it’s NOT America.

If there were Asian Actors from Venezuela, it’d still be Asian American, if that’s how they wanted to word it.

  12. Glenn W Speake

    Akwafina rocks. I love her.

  13. Jmz

This whole conversation is STUPID. Must be nice to pick apart everyone and tweet about it all day.

    1. Ed Kowalc

Everyone just needs to realize the old saying, “you cannot please everyone”, really is the truth,…..

  14. LaureK

That’s literally her natural voice from growing up in Queens – and it is SO far removed from a “Blaccent”! What next? Canceling an actor who grew up in Atlanta for having an accent? What about the bajillion other actors who imitate Hindi accents all the time without hesitation? Yeesh!

  15. The cancel culture needs to die permanently.

    1. Ed Kowalc

Most of it does, I completely agree. Some still is warranted though, in my opinion, for the more racist and other heinous ways of thinking….

  16. jennelle Messer

I love Katie she was the funniest person on that video after all those action day for fighting people I love Katie she was Fearless I would like to be like her one day she’s not scared to say what she has to say about her mouth and not envy her I hope people speak like that all the time and speak their minds I know I do and I don’t sit there and let people just push me around whenever they feel like in Katy reminds me of me is she so funny she makes me laugh throughout the movie.

  17. JB

Why does everyone get this wrong? He is not called “The Mandarin”. That’s Trevor’s made up name. Wenwu openly mocks that name!

  18. Beaux Guerin

Except her “blaccent” is actually just a Queens accent, where she’s from… I’m sure it was only white people who came up with this one. I’m from Texas and therefor have a regional accent as well. By this standard am I supposed to accuse black folks of white cultural appropiation if they sound Texan? People taking this crap too far.

    1. Justin

You all keep saying this, but the thing is she has a youtube career from before her Hollywood career where she doesn’t sound like that. The accent is adopted for her image.

      1. Jet Black

Did it ever cross your mind that she suppressed her natural accent in the earlier part of her career so that it would not limit her roles, but now that she has a track record, she is just being herself? Moron.

  19. Justin

It’s amusing to see how Hollywood uses cancel culture as a way to play both sides of the spectrum to sell tickets.

  20. i love her she can talk how she want hell im a black man and i dont see nothing wrong with the way she talk with her sexy self let her get her money i think she is funny as hell i wish i could meet her

  21. Jay

Some people are just idiots. I wondered about her accent when I first heard the controversy made by those with nothing better to do, but forgot about it when I learned where she grew up.
I think a lot of this stuff is crap.
White people can’t do rules originally made for an Asian, a black person, or whatever, but it is ok for them to take roles originally made for white people.
To me, that is just exclusionary thinking, and treating one group of people differently than the rest. Putting some people in a box. I feel that just goes down the wrong road.
I think the role should go to the most suitable person. Not someone specifically because of their race, however, it is possible that the best person IS someone of the race that the role was originally made for.

  22. Not bob

I haven’t heard anyone say anything about this before this article. I don’t think people really care as much as the news makes people think.

    1. Justin

      Bingo

  23. Tiar/A

Awkwafina’s amazing in this movie! She was in Raya and the Last Dragon too, as The Last Dragon (Sisu)!

  24. Eric Castillo

Blatant antisemite Mel Gibson still has a career. Woman beater Russel Crowe still has a career. Creepy Louis Ck still has a career.

Anyone who pretends cancel culture is real is selling something.

    1. Crowe and Gibson have F You money, much like Chappelle.
      CK?
I barely hear anything about him except when someone mentions that he’s been cancelled.

    2. Begone

And far more people have lost their careers due to this “nonexistent” cancel culture. Exceptions aren’t the rule… although your examples are bad and those people barely have a career right now and are living off the wealth they already had. Haven’t heard about Louis CK in a looooong time.

Also, three celebrities? You realize anyone can be “cancelled”, right? Plenty of everyday people have lost their jobs this way over social media. Celebs arent the only people that exist.

      1. Me

CK is touring right now and he got a Grammy nomination last week, so….

  25. Nick Boutillier

Akwafina in intollerably bad in all her roles. She definitely uses an accent that mocks black people. This ridiculous talk about it being a queens thing is absurd. Even black people from queens don’t talk the way she does. It’s an exaggerated attempt to sound black and it needs to stop. Black people don’t even speak that way, only other races trying to mock them or be extra. She definitely needs to be canceled.

    1. HahaYeahNo

Guys, we found one of them. Does anyone have a spare life? This guy
      definitely needs one.

You don’t look like a better person by putting words into the mouths of minorities… which you shouldn’t be doing anyway. How are those brownie points working out for you?

It’s bad enough your a braindead cancel culture drone, but even worse that you’re a white dude trying to tell people what they should be offended about.

    2. Ram

You sounds like an expert on which accent mocks black people.

  26. Jay

Let’s actors act and stfu! If you don’t want to watch it, don’t watch it! Critics are the worst and that progression needs to die off.

    1. Jay

      Profession*

  27. Eric

    The Black delegation requests Eminem!

  28. Ed Kowalc

    Just Three thoughts:
    (1) Cancel Culture has a place, in my opinion, but I think it loses some of its credibility when it focuses on what the majority, including the majority of minorities, considers more “trivial” items, kinda like this one. I mean the manner of speech, while it is typically though of as how many “street-wise” American’s who also have black or dark skin speak, it is not limited to that demographic. Many Americans, regardless of skin color, have adopted that way of speaking. I think the issues that Cancel Culture needs to focus on are the more obvious racist, sexist, criminal, heinous, and degrading comments and actions, as well as the unapologetic or lip-service apologies sometimes offered by those who make or commit them or take those stances.
(2). All of us need to always remember that no matter what it is, you simply cannot please everyone.
(3). I mostly agree with the earlier comment that the role should go to the actress / actor who is the best fit for the role. Sometimes race, gender, or demographic is part of that decision. However, at the beginning, that latter part of that beginning phase is kinda where we still are,.
As a result, sometimes the minority actor needs to be considered a bit extra until the “old school” members of the “powers that be” that are still racist, sexists, or bigots get past that rediculous way of thinking and understand that none of those items should be considered or enter enter into your thought process. As we all know too well, there are still people out there that think that way. Sometimes getting minorities or women or transgender individuals, etc. into successful roles in successful movies is the only way to accomplish that goal. In the end, green speaks volumes to many, although also not the correct way of thinking in my opinion. Eventually I hope we do get to that point where none of those items are even thought of anymore when chosing an actress / actor, or really any employee, anywhere. Just get the best person for the job in that position. I believe we will get there, one step at a time.

    1. Begone

That’s unfortunately an impossibility so long as Outrage culture supercedes Cancel Culture. Cancel Culture will always bend to the whims of the minority of people who get overly offended and angry about every single little thing. All of this misuse of “power” takes away the credibility of Cancel Culture itself. Not saying no good stuff has come out of it, but a vast majority has been nonsense.

      1. CTrent29

It’s amazing how people, who claim to be open minded, are willing to tolerate racism and hypocrisy for the sake of being entertained. Humans are such lowlifes.

    2. Jet Black

Awesome that you think it is your job to decide what is the correct way to think. Just like all the fanatics that cause pain in the world, whether it is a religion (including atheism), dictators, cult leaders, and any other self-righteous psychopath. Live YOUR values and let others live thiers; Natural Selection works with culture as well.

  29. Ya

Awkwafina is awesome. Love to see more and more of her.

  30. DLand

Well then, I guess people have no real life & must be really board keeping stupid junk like this going 🤣🤣🤣 Boy, people with “ACCENTS” must have it really hard then 🤣🤣🤣 I Loooooooove British and Australian accents. They’re Beautiful to me🥰🥰🥰 and then they turn right back around and tell me that my American/ English accent is great too. Go figure. I never knew that I had an American accent 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  31. Beth

Awkwafina is a great and humble actress. Her accent, whether black accent or not, doesn’t make her popular or successful. Besides many like me found her accent quite unique and lovely. The accuse of her mocking African American by her accent is as ridiculous as claiming Einstein’s unkempt hair is a mocking of homeless people.

  32. Travis Repp

I have no idea what part of her story relates to the title of this article.

  33. JLJ

I think Awkwafina is bland and mediocre. It’s making me feel so bad i might kee muhself. Please banish her.

  34. Kathleen Marsh

Awquafina is hardly the first person to talk that way, think Michael Rappaport. As for it being a blaccent, that assumes that all black people speak in a stereotypical low class uneducated way. We don’t. If Awquafina wants to sound that way, she is welcome to it. I want no association with that “accent”.

  35. CZ

Shes from Brooklyn and that’s the way she sounds. It’s not cancel culture when you are prejudiced against a person’s trait but doing so in the name of being “racially sensitive” is, by definition, bigotry. These social warriors need to stop hating on her for being who she is …

  36. KATHLEEN G MURRAY

She’s from Queens, NY. They all sound like that. We Long Guylanders get it. 🙄

  37. luis

I didn’t even know there was an actress by the name of Aquafina (however her name is spelled. Boycotting a movie or such a stupid reason says more about the idiots trying to do the canceling than anyone else. They need to get lives or boyfriend/girlfriend, or a different hobby. Losers.

  38. E. Mingeaux

She cleaned that Blaccent right on up in the film and e listened hard, so it did have an impact and she did switch it up, because she was forced to. Racists can learn, you just have to teach them. I will continue listening, hard. Next she is going to need to apologize for the offensive material that is already out there. And she will, bet.

    1. Jeff Knox

Or you could seek professional help and stop getting so offended by entertainment. Grow up, you feelings are irrelevant

  39. Brian

Love the movie Shang Chi. Been watching it two days on repeat. As a black American her speaking with a ‘ blaccent’ doesn’t bother me. She’s a comedian who’s funny and that’s all that matters to me. We live in a strange time. Everything that pleases one offends everybody else. It is all it is.

  40. Sean

They somehow didn’t manage to change anything. It was a stupid “boycott.” They achieved nothing and she will be back for the next Disney film. Hide and seek.

  41. Nay

99.9% of people didn’t know she was “cancelled”

  42. Reidel A Bibbs

How was she “canceled”? If she got another role in a movie she literally was not canceled. People saying things doesn’t mean she’s canceled

  43. Heather Dingley

I tune out the noise and enjoy the entertainment. I loved this adaptation!! Absolutely loved it!

  44. James

Who cares what actors and actresses say. They picked a career where they entertain people. So shut the hell up and dance monkey, dance.

  45. Matt

Nobody cares about her accent. Her character sucked because she was the goofy character who had nothing to do and just followed the main character around like a puppy dog.

You could have removed her and the movie would have probably been a bit better. Like those cheesy jokes in marvel movies after a serious moment. They’re just not necessary.

  46. Mike

I thought she was great in the movie! Very funny and loved when she was busting “Sean” Chi’s chops on the plane 😂

  47. Isaac

I could care less the opinions of the Cancel Culture. I choose to go to a movie based on if I think it will have a good story. I could care less about actor “controversy”.

  48. Michael

This was a made up controversy looking to be the first to “cancel” a new category. The accent is true to where she comes from in New York and has been consistent her entire career. There have been no boycotts just writers of articles like this looking to make a name for themselves by sowing hate.

  49. Jeff Knox

The truth is, no one cares and articles like this are largely pointless and stupid. No one boycotted anything. Just look at the movies people have supposedly boycotted over stupid stuff like this. They are some of the most successful, most watched, most loved movies out there. The larger movie watching public doesn’t care about idiotic things like this, and just like watching movies. If some mentally ill fools wants to no longer watch films with a certain star, that’s their right, but they are irrelevant and dont amount to any statistically significant number of the movie watch ing public. Most people don’t even care if the actors are despicable people in the real world, because it has nothing to do with the movie or tv show. Nor should we care.

  50. Raz

She grew up in Queens New York. Its not a “blaccent”. This is who she actually is and what she sounds like. BTW I am a black man, and rather than pass judgement, I do my own research before posting ignorant comments. Leave this actress alone.

  51. Matthew Trott

Most of the commentators here seem to be unaware of Awkwafina’s career as a youtuber / rapper before her Hollywood acting career. Her native accent is Queens, but critisism is the use of Blaccent in her rapping, nothing to do with her movies. I kind of get it when you watch videos of her songs but honestly you could level the same arguements at any white rapper. Rappers don’t have a problem with it as it’s seen as part of rap culture, not black culture. It’s just a small minority that have jumped on to the cultural appropriation bandwagon without realising that rap and hip hop’s roots are about appropriation in the means to create new art. No-one points to Run DMC and says they appropriated white rock music to make Walk This Way.

  52. Eric

    Love her…The End!!!

  53. What Differencedoesitmake

Are you people developmentally disabled? She’s a not-white female, unless she sets a bus load of kids in fire in public, she gets a pass. Because, reasons.

  54. Rudy

So Awkwafina is getting heat for “cultural appropriation”?Basketball was invented by a white Canadian guy. Maybe blacks should stop playing basketball.

  55. Lily

Literally no one was “boycotting” anyone. A handful of disgruntled people on Twitter is not a boycott. 😂

  56. Kristy

Cancel Culture scares me. I’m glad to see places where its undue noise has less power.

  57. Cj Brown

There’s nothing to cancel, however, if she’s willing to acknowledge anything regarding her past and wants to apologize for it? Then accept that ….

This is different compared to anyone who continues to behave in a certain way that draws negative attention (in which case I expect a Company to speak with the talent regarding the negative publicity).

I’m fine when films and television decide to change things with regards to today’s standards, but I’m not fine when we neuter past content.

  58. Me

She got cancelled for not wanting to be turned into a racial stereotype? Who cancelled her? The KKK?

  59. Shaun

There is no “contraversy.” Stop trying to create one. She did nothing wrong. Literally nothing.

    1. Ben

First: Stop trying to make cancel culture a thing, a few big mouths on twitter isn’t a culture.

Second: Awkwafina is a terrible actress and the character was really annoying.

    2. Ben

Ah crap, I didn’t mean to make that a reply to you, sorry.

  60. Tyrone

    Cigar frog

  61. threenorns

She does not have a “blaccent” – she speaks the same way anybody who grew up in Queens speaks.

What’s next: “they” are going to demand Sylvester Stallone’s voice be re-recorded so his accent is “proper”?

  62. Lisa

People will always look for something to complain about. She’s kept out of the media attention, taking roles she wants and she talks like this all the time. I feel her ‘accent’ is based on growing up in Queens and nothing more than that. Get over yourselves.

  63. omg man! Aquafina is HARDLY CNACELLED! lol. Her show..’Nora from queens? Could NOT BE funnier! and? its a HIT! a big one . And. The dude that plays shawn(gchi) 😆 Seeme to have gotten A.big break. As he was all over season 1 and HILARIOUS himself. I’m not sure..but..its possible SHE helped his career and returned the favor. ‘Cancelled’? lol. you’re cancelled

  64. Lisa Nakai

Sorry, I always thought she sounded like a New Yorker. Never associated her accent as black. So, if she had a Boston accent would that be a problem and what ethic group would she be accused of sounding like. Just curious.

  65. James

100% of cancel culture people useless turds. Glad she got another role.

  66. Silvia

Iam with Awkawfina she is funny n cute n very intelligent true to what feels correct to her n makes a point

  67. Michael

I’m not sure what “blaccent” people felt they heard, but I am black (Harlem native), I love this actress and I want to see her in more MCU films. It’s one thing when an actor comes out with a blatantly prejudiced stance that the studios rubber stamp by continuing to be associated with that actor. This seems like some people’s opinion and I don’t think she should be “cancelled” for that.

  68. Jessica

    This frustrates me…
As someone who grew up over 5 different continents, I feel I can assert this much: accents are defined by where you grow up and how the people around you speak. For example, one of my best friend’s baby sister was born in Angola and lived there till she was 6. She had a Angolan/Portuguese accent, because the teacher who taught her how to read, her peers in school, and her babysitter all had this accent.
Furthermore, this type of speech, prosody, and the modifying of words can exist for reasons race does not account for like the associated with neurodivergence.
Many people of different nationalities and ethnicities can live in the same place, and when city planning is classist, this means your surrounding culture is determined less by race or nationality and more by those who experience what you experience.
Furthermore, Latin American and Asian cultures are massive platforms for hip hop and rap, where much of the AAVE verbal styles can be traced to. Hip Hop and Rap grew out of a South Bronx gang’s peacekeeper’s death and a multicultural alliance formed in its wake (watch Rubble Kings, its great). Having come together to air their differences, the leader of the murdered peacekeeper’s gang invited everyone to his gang’s jam session. And so the Puerto Ricans came, the African Liberation came, many Asian gangs came, and together they created Hip Hop. It grew from oppression, desperation, community, and the need to spread knowledge (watch TedXTalk on Shakespeare and Hip Hop). African Americans are not alone in this experience.
Awkwafina was born in Queens, raised by a single father and her grandparents, began rapping at 13, suffered personal trauma in college, and came out of it all with a sense of humor.
She, like Benjy Melendez and Karate Charlie, was a revolutionary as she is the first female Asian-American rapper.
While part of this vernacular developed due to the unique experience of slavery, the refusal of education, and segregation that is an inherent part of Black ancestry, but the same types of modifications to syntax can be explained by growing up in a community that speaks that way, speaking English as a second language, or limited education.
I do think evaluation of the content, biases, pros, and cons of each individual piece of art or media we ingest, but this should not equate to immediate cancellation and gatekeeping.

  69. K

She refused to minstrel her culture, but had no problem doing it with black culture, and as usual no o e cares, her people and fans will continue to watch her, her comment about having a conversation.. was lame, her saying it was complicated, was a cop out ,but whatever, it’s not like the entire world hasn’t benefitted off of black culture. While demonizing black people…

  70. Drakkensong

If rock and roll were invented today, it would be boycotted for cultural appropriation

  71. Jassy

I never thought her accent as “blaccent” and I lived in New York for almost a decade. I was surprised to see some blacks (mostly women) on Twitter call for boycotting Shang-Chi because of her accent. Imagine if people had called for boycotting Black Panther!

May I ask people who took offense: What do you expect a 3rd generation (at least) Asian New Yorker from Queens sound like? With a Chinese accent? Or a preppy accent?

The whole thing smacks of jealousy toward an Asian American actress who made it in Hollywood, which is extremely rare.

  72. Matt

Literally nobody boycotted her, what are you on about?

  73. Kay

This is so idiotic to try and “cancel” her for supposed Blaccent ? Smdh , she is from NY, so shes Gina have an Easy coast accent, bit as others have stated , how is she talking like a black person ? Slang? I mean that’s like when people say you’re talking “white” because you speak properly & complete sentences , some people need to get life & cancel themselves

  74. Angular Momentum

Who cares? A ‘blaccent’ is a fictional accent anyway. No one actually has one, they just put one on. It’s completely different than what Asians have gone through in Hollywood. Not to take away from other cultures, but this article is focused on them, so I am as well. This just goes to show that Cancel culture is losing its power and its refreshing, honestly.

  75. movie guy

Jeez, just days ago yall called loki a failure. The criteria for what is successful and what isn’t seems to be very… situational here
