Sorry to the writers but you agreed to the deal at the time. If you want more of the profits, you need to be taking a bigger part of the risk that your idea will be financially viable in the first place.

I’m glad to see that Marvel is willing to renegotiate their contracts. As the stories are picked up for movies and TV, writers don’t deserve a ton, but they should get at least a small share in the success of their work.

This is a disingenuous argument. Many (all) of the story lines the MCU has used for big screen and small screen adaptations were created years before those adaptations were considered a possibility. How can you plan or negotiate for something you don’t even know is a thing?!

Going forward, all writers definitely need to negotiate better terms for their material to protect their creative rights when their story lines go mainstream so they can benefit too.

Hindsight is 20/20. These creators knew what the terms were when they signed up. They get a flat rate for their stories and in exchange, they wind up getting higher sales on their creator owned work.

Start writing screenplays for the medium that’s much more lucrative if you’re writing about superheroes to make good money. 95% of the humans who know about the Winter Soldier became aware of his existence because of the movies, not because of what these guys wrote for Marvel Comics 20 or more years ago ??

If they get selected based off their rates, you know for a fact, Disney and who knows who else, will go with the cheaper options.

So no, they shouldn’t try to negotiate with Disney. They know they’re being screwed and they’re stuck.
