I watched this with my grandson. I didn’t even know about the controversy until after. I see no LGBT references in this movie. These are 2 friends learning about life and what it’s like to be human.
Why do all the subsequent stories referencing what Anthony Mackie said not include the full quote, only a cherry-picked version? Once the full context is included, what he said was not offensive. Seems like someone is just TRYING to create controversy where there is none.
What a joke your blog has become. You literally have the director and write or the film telling you there is no connection, yet you insist there is.
Then to attack Mackie for what he said? Pathetic.
Why everything lately has to be taken with a LGTBQ reference is beyond me! Yes, those of this community are definitely entitled to their opinion, but trying to find references to their lifestyle in innocent movies, books, et cetera is getting a bit out of hand. You CAN have a loving friendship without any sex-based overtones thrown in.
its because people like you who insist that literally anything thats lgbtq+ is sexual. i knew i was gay by the age of 10. it was a simple crush on another guy. me loving who i want to love isnt a “lifestyle”. just let the lgbtq+ community have representation and maybe it wont be sexualized.
Why always try to change the innocence of children?Remember when Entertainment was just that ?No hidden messages or agenda.I held all my friends hands as a small child it was common and that did not make me Bisexual nor was it even considered. The acceptance has already been vividly proven, now leave some things to the straight community.
Tina, or should I call you Karen, there has never been a time when someone’s agenda hasn’t been pushed, and that can been seen clearly through old cartoons especially. Get over yourself if you felt like you had to share that with the world. Who cares either way honestly. Your comment is just blind and asinine
Alright so, you guys need to stop saying we’re desperate and that we’re sexualizing teenage boys. Because we’re not. We understand that they are not in love as the creator says. And it’s not our fault our community gets just a short film out of 100+ movies/shows on Disney plus. That’s all we get. Being gay isn’t just sex. It’ll be good if kids can see that being gay exists before they grow up and see two people of the same sex being in a romantic relationship and not knowing what that is.
Whatever it is, the beauty of the movie is that it represents how people can care about eachother and this can relate to whoever and speak to them in however way they want to imagine it.
You weirdos tried to push something into a kids movie that wasn’t there and it backfired. I’m glad the director said what he did maybe the Alphabet People will calm down trying to make everything about them.
Okayyyyy. What’s the difference, tangled, little mermaid, lion king, aladian, beauty and the GOD DAMN beast all have relationships, it’s not like they just go start having sex on the screen. Why dont you think those will corrupt you children but one possible gay relationship will
I can understand that the LGTBQ community wants to feel validated, but I don’t think you should make this into something that it’s not. The director already said that’s it’s not. At that age girls and boys are so friendly with each other and you shouldn’t automatically assume that’s it’s a romantic relationship cause they can just be friends. I remember at that age you were so much freer and now they can’t even interact that way anymore, because people automatically assume something that is not.
Ha ha. Stupid lefties. Funny actually it’s On the contrary. This is a classic tale where Luca is a bit though innocently attracted to Giuilietta and Alberto is jealous his buddy friend (and mentee in this case) is a bit taken away. Stupid democrats trying to ruin everything.
The homophobia in this comment section is laughable and quite ironic, considering the discussion of the moral and plot of the movie. Just because a movie wasn’t intended to be about something, doesn’t mean people can’t have their own interpretation. If you’ve seen the movie, it obviously portrays hiding who you are in fear of rejection and not being accepted, which aligns with the lgbtq+ experience.
Honestly I think that it’s unfair that lgbtq+ have to bring everything up in a kids movie it’s crazy like let us enjoy our movie without y’all making it WIERD I know y’all go through hard times but stop making everything about you yeah people say the movie is fruity but they are FRIENDS what’s next monsters inc?
ok Cecilia. first of all why was your comment relating the lgbtqia+ community as “weird” second of all, monsters inc has no queer coded scenes, Luca does. Also, it is spelled “weird” not “wierd”
why is everyone in the comments saying that people are trying so hard to add sexual relationships in a kids movie, what does being gay have to do with sex? also people are bringing up the fact that “they are kids” Alberto is 14 and Luca is 13 they are perfectly capable of having crushes. In the movie “Up” when they show Carl and Elliot as children everyone thinks “oh they are so cute together they have crushes on each other” but then get upset when the media thinks that two boys have a crush on each other. It does no harm and honestly if you watch the movie there is so many scenes that are queer coded, same sex friends do not interact that way(or at least in my experience, ESPECIALLY males. Usually males consider hugging and physical touch feminine because of their internalized toxic masculinity) so whether or not it isn’t official, why can’t the lgbtqia+ community enjoy this movie and think that the boys are experiencing first love. if you don’t think that their relationship was queer coded then rewatch the train scene and tell me you have interacted with your same sex platonic friend in that way.
Giovanni, you do when your friends are family! It doesn’t have to be romantic to react that way to your best friend leaving. I would react similarly if my best friend was leaving.
Anon, there was nothing wrong with her comment. That is not what’s called being a Karen. The movie features two close male boys. This doesn’t mean they are gay. They were just showing a movie about friendship. Idk how old you are, but Tina is right. We were kids, we just enjoyed movies.
Okayyyyy. What’s the difference, tangled, little mermaid, lion king, aladian, beauty and the GOD DAMN beast all have relationships, it’s not like they just go start having sex on the screen. Why dont you think those will corrupt you children but one possible gay relationship will
why do you guys hate lgbtq people so much? most people aren’t even saying it’s a romance, just that the characters are lgbtq. why do you want to strip away any hint of representation we feel we have? you would never ever do this with a straight movie. and you didn’t write the movie, just directed it. movies are a form of art, people can interpret them how they want to. it is just cruel to write this.
People can feel however they want but the creator said that they’re not gay. Why can’t people accept that two boys can be best friends and care about each other without being gay? If they were two girls treating each other like that, no one would say anything.
The movie definitely did not give me the impression that it is about a romance, but about friendship, not judging what you don’t understand, and being true to yourself. I can see, though, how the story can be seen as a depiction of common experiences among individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. I agree with those who have said that art can mean whatever it means to the audience. You can find personal meaning in a movie, song, painting, etc., regardless of the creator’s intent.
A movie is a type of art. The wider the audience that can be reached and can relate to it, the better the art in my opinion.
I personally don’t see any intimacy here. Alberto has no one until he happens by Luca. He gets visibly jealous when Luca shares mutual interests with Giulia. How that means they’re gay is a stretch for me, but to each their own. Everyone will take what take from something. Nothing wrong with that.

Because those fools are so crazy desperate for “acceptance” that they will inject themselves into everything, even when there is no need for it.
“representation” is what they scream for, but really, it’s just ugly vanity, a symptom of pride.

dont forget about Pixars Cars. These folks will accept relationships in cars as long as they are straight. But queer human characters? Nah man
