Cry us an overbuilt corporate river, AMC–
We were ROOTING for you to go bankrupt, so we could get back to the local-theater/drive-in model we rediscovered during the pandemic.

The current chain-cineplex model barely hung on showing every movie available even while theaters were open, and if you want to choose not to show some, that’s your loss.

This article is pointless. We know that AMC banned Universal films becausethey stated that this was going to be their new way of doing business from now on. Disney made no such statement.

I think AMC needs Disney way more than Disney needs AMC. One company is running on fumes… and the other is Disney; you don’t ban the gas station when you’re out of gas.

The current theater model is unsustainable, and has been for a long while. I was really hoping Covid would be the final nail, so we could finally see a rise to a new more modern tailored model of theater going, but then Reddit extended their life slightly with the Wall Street situation (which otherwise was great for pointing out WS flaws and making gamblers who think they’re business men mad their game wasn’t really rigged in their favor). But AMC, along with most other big chains, needs to die off in order for actually profitable theaters. While most likely having less occasions, new models will be designed for a world where you go to the theater for the experience and not for necessity in seeing a movie; enforced rules on cell phone use and such during the movie, perhaps holding events tailored to showing a specific movie at a commission price (classic movies or cult favorites), and so on. Roller rinks and arcades didn’t stop existing, they just became a product for specific clientele.

Wow. You really don’t know what you’re talking about. They do have film events for special films (Fathom Events), they have expanded food selections and introduced recliner seats and Dolby theaters have their own special seats. I lot of what drove down AMC value before the pandemic wasn’t ticket sales but the group that owned the larger shares in the company, a Chinese company known for theme parks that were declining in attendance and value, they are no longer on the board. Plus a lot of theaters are still in malls. The problem is the precieved value in theater viewing which is communal vs home viewing which is private and customizable. The cost factor is big, travel, tickets, food, sitter… And not everyone has the resources to feed themselves or keep a roof over their head let alone go to a theater or stream. Then there is comfort in being in your PJs and watching whatever. What I’ve seen last week with Godzilla vs Kong is that when there is an “event” film people will want to see it in theaters and complain they can’t get tickets in person because of seating restrictions so will get tickets for the next day, something you can’t do with sports events. We are far from the next Endgame but so are cinemas, don’t count them out.

Perfectly said we need in person theater’s just as much as Disney and the rest of the streaming services. Competition is good but some business are needed.
