Holiday shopping, the want to reestablish/recreate some kind of normalcy, and the lack of AP’s are the major factors for the general increase in crowd sizes at Disney Springs.
I’m not sure I agree with the weekend crowding/locals idea, I’m local and avoid DS during weekends as do many other local people.
We just got home from a trip spent 3 days in Disney including a trip to Disney Springs and 2 days in Universal and our time at Disney Springs on Friday night was the only time my family didn’t feel comfortable we ate dinner and left. It was way to crowded, there has to be a way for them to control crowds and keep people safe.

Disney Springs is crowded because it does not require a park pass. People can decide to go at anytime.
