    Flaviana,
God bless you and yours. May his blessings be upon you. And they will.
I was also a Disney World Employee. I was a ship Captain at the Magic Kingdom for six years and hauled many a passenger to the Poly. I loved my job. But, I was retired. I worked at Disney for the love of being around all the happy people. I did not need the income. So I can feel for the thousands of my counter parts who needed the money.
Given that, God has taken you away from Disney. It is not a good company. I will never work or visit their parks. They are a godless company. Their own CEO statements recently prove such. Yeah, Micky Mouse is all cute, and the Disney name is used. But, the Disney family is not part of Walt Disney World any longer. They left long ago. In 2003 Roy Disney separated from the “Corporation” stating “…the Company is rapacious, soul-less, and always looking for the “quick buck”
This is the current Disney, ABC, etc. They are Godless money grabbers. Be happy you are away from them so they no longer affect your soul.

This does not help any cast members situations during this heartbreaking layoff. Democrat? Republican? It makes no matter your party when you are struggling to pay your rent/mortgage, put food on your table, pay your bills…. especially during the holidays. It’s best to be supportive…. not politically argumentative.

      1. Scout

This reply should be down by Boba Fett’s and Christian’s.

    2. Jim

I am also a former cast member. I feel very differently than you do.

Your comment is very self-serving and I sense many people didn’t appreciate it.

  2. Boba Fett

Oh well…stop voting for democrats that want to shut the country down whenever a virus breaks out in order to control the people. You get what you ask for.

    1. Florence Knarr

The virus has had an impact on the entire world. You want to make it political and easy to pass blame. Fine, a Republican president was in office during shutdowns and, rather than make a standard to follow, left it up to each state. Florida is run by Republicans. Nice deflection though.

    2. Christian

Really? It’s this do nothing Republican president and the useless Fla. governor that let the virus gets out of hand. Do you think people will go to park and dine out if they are sick and dying?

    3. Gern Blanston

I am sure you didn’t, but if you actually read the entire article and not just what ITM wrote you would know that the featured CM did vote for Trump. I have no feelings for that part of the article and hope her daughter can get the help she needs even after she voted for the party that likes to take away public assistance.

I am also certain, that unlike Boba Fett, you do not wear a mask or social distance. Good luck with that.

    4. Jim

      So please tell me:

What party is the current US president?
What party is the current FL governor?
What party is both the current FL US Senators?

So much intelligence in your comment.

I can empathize with Flaviana and all the other employees who’ve lost their jobs because of the pandemic. I was laid off during the tech boom/collapse of 2000. It was demeaning, heartbreaking, and terrifying – not knowing where I’d land and what would happen to my family and myself.

But I also know people who have literally been robbed of their lives because of COVID-19. A few have died, some have been so severely ill that months later they’re still trying to get back to the point of being able to handle a normal day.

I don’t know exactly what the answer is. It’s definitely not just opening everything up. Nor is it completely shutting everything down. There does seem to be a workable balance somewhere in-between. But it also seems to require people to take seriously the precautions of masking, not gathering socially, distancing, washing hands, staying home when you know you’ve been exposed or are feeling sick.

Without the vast majority of people doing those things we’ve seen the disease work back up to levels that overwhelm healthcare, that continually drain, discourage, and exhaust our healthcare professionals, and yes drive counties and states to take more restrictive actions.

The reality of this is it’s in our individual hands.

You know what? Many people lost their jobs. I lost my job with them too, but I’m not crying about it. You lost the short term federal 600 a week bump? Wow, me too… EVERYONE did too! Instead of waiting for a call back, I searched from day one for a job. I searched for months before I found one.

So, get over it! Get off your ‘poor me, I’m going to start a go fund me, so I don’t have to do the hard thing and get a job’ bandwagon. Show your kids what an adult does, and get a job to support your family. Unemployment is not there to support your lifestyle forever. It’s to help you till you find a job!

Dont forget,, Disney is losing a lot of money every single day that they’re not open to the full capacity. California still hasn’t opened. Other parks are reclosing. And you complain about Disney not keeping paying you to sit at home and do nothing? Put the blame where it belongs! The people you voted into office who are not allowing businesses to reopen, or are currently reclosing the ones they temporarity ‘allowed’ to reopen.

I agree. As a former cast member I have no more sympathy for this woman than I do for anyone else who was laid off. It is terrible and our hearts should be open to everyone. I’ve been laid off, my friends have been laid off, my neighbors have been laid off, and we all have recognized we need to make ends meet another way. It is tough being an adult, but we should not be complaining if we have our health.

However, there is something else that really ticks me off about all these whining cast members. They have no drive and no desire to do better so they complain. It’s like they forgot this was a job and they just showed up for work not thinking of the future expecting the Mouse House to bank them forever. Apparently, if they can’t work at Disney, they need to be supported because they don’t want to work at all. I’ve gotten more GoFund me requests from former coworkers in the past six weeks than I have EVER gotten in my life. They expect me, someone who left after a summer to pursue higher learning, to help them out because they never thought past their shifts. It’s so childish.

Disney is taking a beating in the economy too. These aren’t easy times. And not one person is entitled to anything more than another. The cast members really need to stop complaining. They have a great point of reference to find new work and I personally know this company on the resume will open doors. It’s just too bad they can’t get past their pity party.

  5. Christian

Disney should not pay the CEO bonus, they surely can help their employee more. But then don’t sounds like she’s doing much to help herself either.

  6. “The pandemic, of course, was a worst-case scenario nobody could have imagined…”

False. Previuos *responsible* White House administrations were imagining AND planning for it. Responsible corporations, with vast resources, should have planned for it too — to protect their operation and their workers. Instead, when this *foreseeable* crisis comes along, the lowest level workers, barely making a living wage to start with, get all the blame and suffering for not being prepared themselves. Our current system is so very flawed.

Ha yes we’d be in great shape if HRC had won. Sure, maybe we’d have 100k fewer deaths (unlikely and unproven) but the insane lockdowns would have cost even more people their jobs.

We like to look at Europe as the beacons of hope, saying we need to be more like them. Well if you think they handled Covid correctly, they’re doing just as bad as we are. So stop blaming this on the white house. It’s a damn pandemic. Get your head out of your butt.

      1. Easy there nameless. Read some non-biased news sources. Trump famously screwed up by dismantling the pandemic response infrastructure and teams of experts put in place by previous administrations. And the “open up” strategy has left Florida with one of the worst *per capita* death rates in the world. If you can’t see those widely accepted facts, then there’s no point in discussing this with you. You keep doing you.

My son is among the 40,000+ cast members being laid off. He is still so stunned to have lost his dream job. Since he was a kid, he’s wanted to work at Disney World and be a part of the magic. He fought through the Disney casting process to finally get hired and be called an ‘official ‘ cast member. Getting a job at Disney is not as easy as you’d think. He loved every moment he spent doing his job…. he had a decent paycheck to pay rent, pay his bills – especially his student loans. Any hope of finishing his Master’s Degree has been set on hold for now…. his money needs to be spent elsewhere. The problem is – his unemployment is ending right after Christmas, along with his severance pay. It does NOT matter whether you are Republican or Democrat – it is ultimately the fault of a deadly virus, with a death toll coming too close to 300,000. There may also be a percentage of mismanagement as well. If you have lost a family member, friend, or co-worker to this crushing disease, you understand the devastation this virus is reaping. The pain and agony is truly heartwrenching and real. But back to the layoffs – the problem with 40,000+ employees laid off from Disney, and whatever numbers from Universal, Sea World, Legoland, Busch Gardens, etc has left the job market flooded with people fighting to find another job. There just aren’t enough jobs leftover in central FL. My daughter tried to find a job in retail, hospitality, housekeeping (even in the local hospitals), in reception at resorts/ hotels that remain open…. anything. Like my son, she had been vying against many others laid off applicants, and even against her brother. A lot of job sites display the number of people applying for any job. We’ve seen that number go as high as 302 people for 1 position. My daughter, who had worked in optometry, got lucky and after 4 months, found a position. My son’s struggle begins now…. he had prayed for a Disney recall, but the chances of that right now are very slim. The virus is not Disney ‘s fault, but the layoff has left a bitter taste in his mouth. Disney executives are still receiving their astronomical paychecks and sizeable dividend checks. They have worries, but certainly not at the level of their rubber-meets-the-road cast members. These executives are NOT giving up their homes, worrying about where to scrounge for food for their family, figure out how to pay utility bills, car insurance, gasoline to go to interviews (if they’re lucky), clothes for growing children. The Disney executives won’t have to apply to Social Services for SNAP benefits or cash assistance. They won’t have to borrow on their pension to make ends meet. My son, like many other Disney cast members, are trying to survive on less…. and soon it will be crashing down with no income. Any politician or executive who states that members of the workforce would rather stay on unemployment (In FL the stimulus package ended in August), has absolutely NO CLUE what these folks are going through. OF COURSE, these folks would rather be working, even if they didn’t like their job. They not only want, but desperately need their jobs and the attached benefits that go with it – for most its health benefits. Oh Disney. My family, especially my son, now looks at you in a different light. The cast members were only a number to executives and could be cut off like a dead tree branch. The cast members laid off mean nothing, next to the Disney executives receiving their bonuses and dividends. The millionaires and billionaires must obtain more money, because what they have is never enough. God help the cast members thrown aside, after 1 year to 30+ years. God help the couples, who both are Disney cast members. Each and every one of these cast members deserved better, but Disney just couldn’t deliver – pandemic or not. So, Disney execs – go float in your pools, have drinks at the club, count your money and STOCKS, while your cast members stand in line at the local food bank. Someone needs to explain WHY are the execs still receiving their stock dividends…. shareholders, maybe, but Disney execs? All bonuses and stock dividends should be going back into the company to help THEIR people. Well, I’m climbing off my soapbox for the day….. my thoughts and prayers go out to every Disney cast member – those working at Disney and facing the possibility of contracting Covid-19…. but mostly, I pray for those laid off and left to figure out how to make ends meet and find another job. Please remain strong. Stay safe and stay healthy.

What the eff is this article? There are millions of people out of work right now. What is the point of this article? Are we supposed to be protesting disney for laying people off? All that would accomplish is more layoffs. Disney is a business. They are getting crushed by COVID. How do you propose businesses like Disney are supposed to keep their full staff while they’re bringing in maybe 1/10 of their usual income?

Flaviana needs to stop crying and go get herself another job.
Disney is a business not a charity. Get over yourselves. This article is trash.

  10. Posting this twice doesn’t make your argument any better. Nice way to toss the “100,000 less deaths” around like that number means nothing. Placing $10/hour churro-making jobs as a higher priority than that many deaths that is the wrong approach — but again, you do you, nameless.
