Best Outdoor Activities at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Disney’s Hollywood Studios has a ton of things to do in it’s refreshed and refurbished state. Visit the Disney Park’s new Star Wars Land and experience the alien landscape, or traipse across Hollywood and discuss punny goings-on with the Citizens!

While there is a roller coaster or two in this park, you’ll want to stick to outdoor adventure rather than the interiors of Rock ‘N’ Roller coaster or Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, which, aside from a partial ride queue, are strictly indoors.

Hollywood Boulevard

Grauman’s Theatre and Classic Celebrity Prints – The famous landmark in L.A. is this Hollywood Movie theatre. Visit the front of this theatre for fun cement handprints that look awfully familiar. This building houses Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

Scoping Faux Billboards – Look up! All the way down Hollywood Boulevard, you’ll see faux billboards featuring our favorite Disney characters and tasteful (yet meaningful) ads of the day. Check the windows below for some park history and hidden meanings.

Sunset Boulevard

Fantasmic! – The greatest outdoor spectacular of all time, this show differs from it’s Disneyland Resort sister. Grab a FastPass for the best seats, and stock up on snacks sold by a Disney Cast Member either at a window or in the aisles. Everything is outdoors, so you’ll be breathing easy at this incredible nighttime spectacular.

Beauty & The Beast – Live on Stage – If you’re a fan of Belle or Beast, this outdoor theatre houses a beautiful show with classic tunes. The 20-30 minute show is a digest of the classic film.

Sunset Ranch Food Court and Market – This sprawling Walt Disney World Dining complex has a few choices for a family of different tastes. Eat outdoors in shaded pavilions and when you’re done, step next door to the elaborate pin trading hut that has lots of eye candy, trading options, and free swaps!

Citizens of Hollywood – Watching a short show by the citizens is one reason we’re always ready to use our Park Hopper. Catching the puns, jokes, and audience interaction is a breeze and a literal breath of fresh air.

Toy Story Land

Alien Swirling Saucer – THE CLAW! A twist on the classic teacup ride, this attraction is more swirls than spin and is refreshing on a hot day with its shaded scene.

Slinky Dog Dash – The newest coaster to this Disney Park has both an outdoor queue and track. It even runs in the rain, which is a lot of fun. This attraction is a must on your Disney World vacation.

Woody’s Lunch Box – Fun fare in a lunch box? You got it. While Toy Story Land as a whole can be exhaustingly hot, a cool drink and a snack at this outdoor stop is a welcome break.

(Skip Toy Story Mania on an outdoor-only agenda as both the queue and ride are indoors).

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Market Merchants – This is a VERY COOL place to walk through. You’ll find very specific goods, incredible popcorn and fun surprises to look at. While it feels a lot like an indoor tunnel, it’s actually open sky above you.

Star Wars Vehicles and Ships – There are a ton of ships and vehicles to see in this land. Droids, Starships and small surprises for Star Wars fans are all over, hidden in the details.

Ronto Roasters and the Droid’s Roasting Engine – Another food location making our outdoor activities at Disney’s Hollywood Studios list is Ronto Roasters. They only sell a few items, but it’s a central location to people watch and enjoy the giant engine “roasting” the meats.

Grand Avenue

Baseline TapHouse Patio – This watering hole is a large draw for locals and vacationers alike. Walk into the bar through large doors and take your purchase to the spacy patio on the corner of Grand Avenue.

Muppet Courtyard Fountain – Miss Piggy is an icon of the Muppet Corner. You’ll see tons of Muppet jokes about, with tons of photos and fun to be had. There’s a deep corner to window shop and a fun surprise from Animal around the corner.

Echo Lake

Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple – This stage show involving YOU is very popular! Running in weather with no rain is an interactive experience that everyone enjoys; even the audience! (skip the Star Wars Launch Bay and Star Tours if you want only outdoor experiences)

Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular – “Cheer as Indy and Marion perform incredible stunts with explosive special effects-and learn the secrets behind the magic.” – WDW Website. This attraction is an opening day staple, involving a few audience members and a ton of action. A whole-family must-do on your Disney vacation.

Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction – We saved the best for last. Grab a classic Premium Mickey Ice Cream Bar from Gertie and enjoy her history as both a Park icon as well as a Hollywood Studio movie-making marvel.
