REVIEW: Motel 6 Feet Under delivers a traditional and effective Halloween haunt experience near Disneyland

It’s difficult to review anything without giving away too many details. Be it a movie, TV series, or a book, any individual piece of media has story elements or plot twists that consumers would be better off experiencing for themselves, rather than having a disenchanted critic ruining the surprises by blabbing about them in their write-ups.

Halloween haunts are no different, and the recent proliferation of these types of events has produced such a wide array of events, each one unique and extraordinary in its own way, that it close to impossible to discuss a specific example without revealing some details.

Fortunately, the creators of Motel 6 Feet Under, an independent haunt in Anaheim, California (located just one short mile from Disneyland,) have made my job easy for me. Upon arrival at the media preview for the event on Friday, I was given a list of elements from the maze that I shouldn’t reveal in my review. No problem! At the very least I can tell you that it’s fun.

Here are some of the other things I can tell you about Motel 6 Feet Under: it’s set in a haunted motel (you probably could have guessed that from its name,) it mixes a very traditional haunted-maze-style template with some cool effects and special setpieces (most of which I can’t go into at any great length,) and it has a giant spider in it– frankly, I’m a little surprised they left the spider off the list.

In all seriousness, Motel 6 Feet Under is a good time, and I don’t blame its designers for wanting to hold onto their secrets. This is a very enjoyable local haunt that is definitely worth visiting if you happen to already be in the Anaheim area. The sets are designed with care, the scare actors all deliver their frights at the appropriate times, and there are a handful of moments that defied my expectations. General admission costs $15, which is about right for the attraction’s length and contents.

It’s important to note that in a ceremony on opening night, a good portion of the proceeds went to the recipient of a scholarship set up by the owners and operators of Motel 6 Feet Under. Halloween fans interested in supporting worthy causes should factor that into the decision of whether or not to attend.
