Changes have been made to Pirates (Jack Sparrow) and Haunted Mansion (Nightmare Before Christmas overlay) and have been extremely well received by people. I would suggest that, whatever they are doing to Club 33, is likely to enhance the experience, just as most other changes that are continually made to attractions, shops, etc every year. Club 33, the building, despite it’s charm, has been on the decline for years and a thorough renovation is needed regardless.
Jack Sparrow is not a bad addition, as he’s a Disney character. However, the original, brilliant Imagineers would’ve written far better dialogue and developed an animatronic figure that didn’t stick out in style like a sore thumb. The fact that Disney has to turn to Tim Burton, Steven Spielberg and other producers for attraction ideas is more evidence of what a creatively-challenged company Disney has become.
I’m all for growing and changing and expanding. Leaving things as is for eternity I don’t think is what Walt or Disney was ever about. I’m sure the expansion will keep much of the charm and elegance. And bring life and newness to a treasured part of Disneyland.
What is the point if the history is destroyed? Its not about the exclusivity,its about the exclusive access to somewhere that Walt knew, seeing the various rooms more or less as he knew them. The legends that have spent time in that place. This is just another money grubbing move to get more cash out of a location that previous stewards had the respect to honor. Im not one for keeping all aspects of the parks the same, but this ripping apart of the history of Club 33 to fit more people in, and the potential destroying of one of the lovliest little spots in the park, the courtyard , shows total disrespect for the precious history and show that sets Disneyland itself apart from all other parks, be they Disney or otherwise.
I completely agree with you here!This makes me sad. I have always wanted to be a member of Club33 for the very reason of its history. Now it will just be another location with no ties to Walt, so what would be the point, I’d rather put my money elsewhere. I will miss the Court of Angels, a longtime family photo tradition each visit. 🙁

I’m a former CM of the Club. You’ll be surprised to learn that that the Club has not always been a profitable business unit, and has never been very profitable. With this expansion, the business case will be improved, but not greatly. So you may ask yourself– after realizing that your were wrong– what’s the point?
Well, to say that the waiting list was the longest line in Disneyland is something of an understatement. Without doing something about it, Disney was implicitly sending a message to its most committed fans: “You’re less important to us than a basic tourist.” Now, you must also realize that Club Members are not who you think they are. A good percentage of them are not one-percenters. These are people who prioritize Disney above most else in their lives. So after billions in investment in the resort since the Club’s opening in 1967, maybe it was time that they send a note of acknowledgement to this group.
As a point of perspective, consider this– many companies reward their loyal customers with everything from punch cards to medallion memberships. Would you not expect a company like Disney to reward it’s most loyal customers in a special and uniquely Disney way?
I agree with the original poster of this comment also. Kim Irvine and the new decision-makers at WDI and Corporate Disney are CLUELESS. They’re nothing but SELL-OUTS! If they want to expand Club 33, they can simply add more facilities OUTSIDE the berm and travel space leading to it, leaving the original intact. Kim Irvine and her higher-ups are all UNQUALIFIED — creatively, morally and ethically — to be in charge of Walt’s legacy. I am NOT happy about the direction Disney is taking at all, although I’m sure that the shareholders, board of directors and other money-grubbers are squealing like swine in pure delight. They will be the destruction of Disneyland. They would like nothing more than to turn the whole place into an overpriced, overcommercialized shopping mall with rides. BOO! HISS!
I completely agree with you, except for the Walt part. Club 33 was not realized until after his death, so he never knew it. But I am completely devastated to be losing the Court Des Anges. That will truly be a shame.
Also, I believe Walt used the area as a private, on-site dining room for entertaining business associates and VIPs. After his death, it was opened as a private club.
Well, I think the biggest appeal of Club 33 is that it is “secret” to most people…and that the small entrance was “hidden”. I don’t know how they can have the same effect of a “secret entrance” if they use those big stairs in the Court of Angels. I also don’t like that the Court of Angels area will now be off-limits to regular people and can only be enjoyed by the elite Club 33 members.
It feels like they are laying the foundation to open Club 33 up as a restaurant for everyone, albeit an expensive one. Just think about it. They are replacing the “secret entrance” that 95% of park guests don’t even know is there with a very high-profile and obvious entrance in the Court of Angels. Now people will ask “What’s up there?” where before they would not have even noticed the nondescript entrance to Club 33. I think this is the natural way for them to just have it be a fancy restaurant in like three years…and no longer a secret club.
Not sure how they can have a “jazz club” up there that is not open to all guests. People will hear the music and want to be up there, and if the Court of Angels entrance is so obvious then people will be upset they can’t go up there.
That’s EXACTLY what they are! In the current Disney workplace, you either echo corporate thinking and tow the company line, or you’re out the door. Most of the real Imagineers have been pushed out or forced into consulting positions. What remains are fairly new hires who are eager to impress management; brown-nosers who’ve climbed the ladder by being yes-people, and a few true visionaries who feel like they’re talking to and beating their heads against the wall. WDI is not the playground of genius and creativity that it used to be. It’s a struggle. I don’t know into which category Kim Irvine falls. She is regarded as somewhat of a celebrity by Disney fans because she’s the daughter of Imagineer Leota Toombs. But she seems to have inherited few of her mother’s creative genes. As I said, Kim Irvine RUINED Carnation Cafe. And I am far from alone with my opinion.
I have ABSOLUTELY NO FAITH in Kim Irvine as an Imagineer/Disney designer. When given the chance to restore the Carnation Cafe to its original charm, she instead turned it into a dull, drab knockoff of a Marie Callender’s. I fear that she will do the same with Club 33. In fact, I have no reason to believe that she won’t. No Imagineer with any real understanding of Walt Disney’s vision would ever tamper with an area as lovely as the Court of Angels. If you ask me (and I know you didn’t), Kim Irvine is a menace to Disney Parks!
The only reason why Corporate Disney is doing this to Club 33 is so that they can sell more sky-high memberships. The Disney Company of today is driven by one thing: GREED. No amount of profit (and they make plenty) is ever enough. And you watch! This expansion will be an excuse to raise Club 33 and Annual Pass fees yet again. If Walt were alive today, he’d spit on them!
I think it’s pretty immature to hurl the word “greed” at people…especially when written in all-CAPS. Ever since the Occupy Wall Street thing a few years ago I guess people try to be cool by shouting “GREED” at a corporation, especially when it does things that an individual doesn’t particularly like. Since Club 33 is just for members and I’m not a member, I don’t much care what happens with it on a practical level.
But, I have read about the Club’s history and Walt’s original intent in creating it…and the Club was always supposed to be there to entertain VIPs, to reward the first investors in Disneyland, and to be a draw for the deep-pockets and wealthy elite so they would want to keep supporting Disneyland. Walt knew that kind of support from the elite was required to keep the rest of the park affordable for regular people.
It sounds like what they are doing with this expansion and jazz club are things that Walt Disney himself wanted to do before his death…and would have actually done decades ago if he had not died in the 1960s. Walt ripped things out all the time and made changes if some new idea came along. I actually trust the Imagineers to come up with some very cool new concepts for Club 33.
To just scream “GREED” at Disney over this is pretty dumb.

Please cite a source for this claim of yours. I think you might not know what the word “profit” means to a business. That’s different than “earnings”. Profit is what is left after all expenses, taxes, payroll, and other business costs are taken out of earnings.

For anyone interested, I did some Googling of HB Ghost’s claims regarding Disney’s profits. First off, the most profitable companies in the world are things like Exxon, AT&T, Chevron, Microsoft, etc. with Exxon being the most profitable: it makes around $30 billion annually. That’s, however, less than “$8 billion per quarter”…which is the profit that HB Ghost claimed Disney makes.
Disney’s nowhere near the list of top-earning companies in the world. Disney makes around $1 billion in earnings per quarter, not $8 billion like HB Ghost claimed. And that number is for the ENTIRE company and all its divisions combined. The parks division makes a profit in the hundreds of millions per year (for all parks combined). That’s it.
The Disney parks division makes less than the film and television divisions…and makes less profit than ESPN, which is a big cash cow for Disney.
I think it’s important to investigate numbers when someone like HB Ghost makes a claim that Disney earns “$8 billion in profits per quarter” because I think Disney superfans see numbers like that, don’t question if it’s true or not, and then get upset that more is not spent on construction projects. The reality is that the company does not make the sort of profits that HB Ghost would have you believe.
I only casually read this site and I’ve never really posted. There’s a lot of passion to be sure, but a lot of vitriol as well which is unfortunate. I’m certain if Walt was around, he wouldn’t speak of others’ characters in such demeaning ways even if he disagreed with them. Especially when most of us out here are only speculating on the motives and internal workings of Disney. We don’t know what directions were given to Kim. If you read fan-sites long enough, you realize no one outside has the full picture and Disney doesn’t share. It’s great to have a hero, and Walt Disney certainly a great one, but none of us wears his mantle. All said, it’s a theme park! If what they are doing causes a person so much anger and distress, you don’t have to go. It’s the best way to get your message across.
I don’t know the stats for DCA. Cars Land is new and very popular with families. It’s old school Disney and wonderful. Imagineer Tony Baxter had a big hand in its development. He is now a consultant for Disney.
While I sure Tony worked on Cars Land, the majority of this work was done by Kevin Rafferty. My point was that DCA is pulling crowds from Disneyland since Cars Land opened, that is why attendance is flat there.
I’m sure some of the changes are money drive as stated by others. I have also heard as Ricky stated that the need for new kitchen prompted some of the changes. I believe the need to move the entrance and the elevator issues has to do with handicap access. I believe both have steps up making it non accessible for handicapped members, who have been taken up stairs via a elevator in the kitchen.
Actually the changes in the elevator have to do with OSHA…they cannot get away from that and with the fact they are going to re-model completely they must at that time bring everything up to standard codes of today. NO more grandfather issue at all and moving the entrance so all of the world knows. DUMB DUMB DUMB Idea…
Pshaw! Disney Parks & Resorts alone earned $3.4 billion 1st quarter, $3.3 billion 2nd quarter and $3.7 billion 3rd quarter. Those figures are from the company’s own earnings reports. And those numbers are probably conservative to avoid paying higher taxes.
The bottom line is that Disneyland shouldn’t take away a beloved scenic spot from the many to better accommodate the few. There are always alternative solutions. Disney seems to have lost all balance in favor of maximizing return on investment per square foot. It’s not how Walt would’ve done things and it’s no way to expand and/or improve an amusement park that claims to be family-oriented, unless that family just happens to be in the upper 3%.
The Court of Angels was always intended to be used as part of the club. The area that will become the new lounge is marked as steakhouse in the original proposed blueprints. The way I see it, we sort of scored having it as long as we did. They are looking back to original ideas and honoring those concepts in the expansion. The club will not have a public unveiling or media tour as with 1901. It will all come from members. Last night was the first preview and I suspect by next week you will all know much more.
Disney has a lot of original proposals and blueprints that were discarded for better ideas. Many aren’t designs deserving of anything other than their place in history. The Court of Angels is a wonderful place within the park. It’s an area all park patrons can enjoy, not just those who’ve bought their way into a now not-so-private-or-elite-but-still-expensive club.
We just received official word about the Club from a Club 33 member. The Court of Angels will close and be turned into a member waiting room with tables and chairs.
So the rumor is true just to verify,. It will CLOSE on January 6th 2014 and re-0pen later in the summer….as the site states open in Jan 2014??? SO a bit confusing Gavin
Having WORKED at Disney Parks I can be 99% SURE that less than 1% of annual attendees EVER walked into that courtyard. To say this is being taken away from the few is spot on….so few in fact that even if they put a merchandise location there…which they have…it never lasted long….since that spot is off the beaten path. Now that they are closing off views into that area the majority of the guests will not even know it was ever there or what it is now. The new entrance will still be hidden as the logo will be on the inside panel of the door and not facing straight out as the current logo.
Please be happy for what you had the chance to experience since if Walt had lived the gallery and the courtyard would have probably never been public areas.
We have had the PRIVILEDGE of visiting Club 33 since 1989. We hate to see change, as to us it was a very special place. Even seeing no salad bar this time, we knew things were changing…..please keep the intimate dining area. All the staff have been fabulous to us and we are willing to pay the price for such a wonderful place to go. It is truly a ‘Disney Experience’ Thank you for allowing us to experience it.

Changes have been made to Pirates (Jack Sparrow) and Haunted Mansion (Nightmare Before Christmas overlay) and have been extremely well received by people. I would suggest that, whatever they are doing to Club 33, is likely to enhance the experience, just as most other changes that are continually made to attractions, shops, etc every year. Club 33, the building, despite it’s charm, has been on the decline for years and a thorough renovation is needed regardless.

Jack Sparrow is not a bad addition, as he’s a Disney character. However, the original, brilliant Imagineers would’ve written far better dialogue and developed an animatronic figure that didn’t stick out in style like a sore thumb. The fact that Disney has to turn to Tim Burton, Steven Spielberg and other producers for attraction ideas is more evidence of what a creatively-challenged company Disney has become.

What is the point if the history is destroyed? Its not about the exclusivity,its about the exclusive access to somewhere that Walt knew, seeing the various rooms more or less as he knew them. The legends that have spent time in that place. This is just another money grubbing move to get more cash out of a location that previous stewards had the respect to honor. Im not one for keeping all aspects of the parks the same, but this ripping apart of the history of Club 33 to fit more people in, and the potential destroying of one of the lovliest little spots in the park, the courtyard , shows total disrespect for the precious history and show that sets Disneyland itself apart from all other parks, be they Disney or otherwise.

I’m a former CM of the Club. You’ll be surprised to learn that that the Club has not always been a profitable business unit, and has never been very profitable. With this expansion, the business case will be improved, but not greatly. So you may ask yourself– after realizing that your were wrong– what’s the point?
Well, to say that the waiting list was the longest line in Disneyland is something of an understatement. Without doing something about it, Disney was implicitly sending a message to its most committed fans: “You’re less important to us than a basic tourist.” Now, you must also realize that Club Members are not who you think they are. A good percentage of them are not one-percenters. These are people who prioritize Disney above most else in their lives. So after billions in investment in the resort since the Club’s opening in 1967, maybe it was time that they send a note of acknowledgement to this group.
As a point of perspective, consider this– many companies reward their loyal customers with everything from punch cards to medallion memberships. Would you not expect a company like Disney to reward it’s most loyal customers in a special and uniquely Disney way?

If they want to expand Club 33, they can simply add more facilities OUTSIDE the berm and travel space leading to it, leaving the original intact. Kim Irvine and her higher-ups are all UNQUALIFIED — creatively, morally and ethically — to be in charge of Walt’s legacy. I am NOT happy about the direction Disney is taking at all, although I’m sure that the shareholders, board of directors and other money-grubbers are squealing like swine in pure delight. They will be the destruction of Disneyland. They would like nothing more than to turn the whole place into an overpriced, overcommercialized shopping mall with rides. BOO! HISS!

Well, I think the biggest appeal of Club 33 is that it is “secret” to most people…and that the small entrance was “hidden”. I don’t know how they can have the same effect of a “secret entrance” if they use those big stairs in the Court of Angels. I also don’t like that the Court of Angels area will now be off-limits to regular people and can only be enjoyed by the elite Club 33 members.
It feels like they are laying the foundation to open Club 33 up as a restaurant for everyone, albeit an expensive one. Just think about it. They are replacing the “secret entrance” that 95% of park guests don’t even know is there with a very high-profile and obvious entrance in the Court of Angels. Now people will ask “What’s up there?” where before they would not have even noticed the nondescript entrance to Club 33. I think this is the natural way for them to just have it be a fancy restaurant in like three years…and no longer a secret club.
Not sure how they can have a “jazz club” up there that is not open to all guests. People will hear the music and want to be up there, and if the Court of Angels entrance is so obvious then people will be upset they can’t go up there.

Most of the real Imagineers have been pushed out or forced into consulting positions. WDI is not the playground of genius and creativity that it used to be. It’s a struggle. I don’t know into which category Kim Irvine falls. I think it’s pretty immature to hurl the word “greed” at people…especially when written in all-CAPS. Ever since the Occupy Wall Street thing a few years ago I guess people try to be cool by shouting “GREED” at a corporation, especially when it does things that an individual doesn’t particularly like. Since Club 33 is just for members and I’m not a member, I don’t much care what happens with it on a practical level.
But, I have read about the Club’s history and Walt’s original intent in creating it…and the Club was always supposed to be there to entertain VIPs, to reward the first investors in Disneyland, and to be a draw for the deep-pockets and wealthy elite so they would want to keep supporting Disneyland. Walt knew that kind of support from the elite was required to keep the rest of the park affordable for regular people.
It sounds like what they are doing with this expansion and jazz club are things that Walt Disney himself wanted to do before his death…and would have actually done decades ago if he had not died in the 1960s. Walt ripped things out all the time and made changes if some new idea came along. I actually trust the Imagineers to come up with some very cool new concepts for Club 33.
To just scream “GREED” at Disney over this is pretty dumb.

Please cite a source for this claim of yours. I think you might not know what the word “profit” means to a business. That’s different than “earnings”. Profit is what is left after all expenses, taxes, payroll, and other business costs are taken out of earnings.

For anyone interested, I did some Googling of HB Ghost’s claims regarding Disney’s profits. First off, the most profitable companies in the world are things like Exxon, AT&T, Chevron, Microsoft, etc. with Exxon being the most profitable: it makes around $30 billion annually. That’s, however, less than “$8 billion per quarter”…which is the profit that HB Ghost claimed Disney makes.
Disney’s nowhere near the list of top-earning companies in the world. Disney makes around $1 billion in earnings per quarter, not $8 billion like HB Ghost claimed. And that number is for the ENTIRE company and all its divisions combined. The parks division makes a profit in the hundreds of millions per year (for all parks combined). That’s it.
The Disney parks division makes less than the film and television divisions…and makes less profit than ESPN, which is a big cash cow for Disney.
I think it’s important to investigate numbers when someone like HB Ghost makes a claim that Disney earns “$8 billion in profits per quarter” because I think Disney superfans see numbers like that, don’t question if it’s true or not, and then get upset that more is not spent on construction projects. The reality is that the company does not make the sort of profits that HB Ghost would have you believe.

Having WORKED at Disney Parks I can be 99% SURE that less than 1% of annual attendees EVER walked into that courtyard. To say this is being taken away from the few is spot on….so few in fact that even if they put a merchandise location there…which they have…it never lasted long….since that spot is off the beaten path. Now that they are closing off views into that area the majority of the guests will not even know it was ever there or what it is now. The new entrance will still be hidden as the logo will be on the inside panel of the door and not facing straight out as the current logo.
Please be happy for what you had the chance to experience since if Walt had lived the gallery and the courtyard would have probably never been public areas.

Even seeing no salad bar this time, we knew things were changing…..please keep the intimate dining area.
