Great review! I’m so glad there’s still fans of this movie. I loved it in theaters, and I was sad when most people (including Eisner) didn’t share my enthusiasm. It’s sad that Disney didn’t keep making animated action flicks like this, Treasure Planet, and Rescuers Down Under. Beautiful animation that appeals to young males who may not be into princess flicks (I was, but I mean in general).
Originally (according to stories), Trousdale & Wise were hired to do “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, thought it was too dull and needed “more monsters”, but time and budget didn’t allow for any.
You sort of get that feeling watching it that there’s a lot more plot that’s missing here, and all we get are the disturbingly nutsy supporting characters bullying our hero.
(It was the movie’s bad box office, along with Titan AE’s, that convinced Hollywood that “Audiences hated animated action”, and forced Eisner to sell Treasure Planet as a wacky comedy. 🙁 )
The TV-pilot sequel’s a lot better at letting the psycho team seem more “normal”, once you put them into a Disney Afternoon Gargoyles episode and let them actually DO something for thirty minutes.
I am so happy this is back on Blu. I had the THX release and DVD an watched it so many times. It is adventure-packed, loved the fact it was geared towards guys, and I guess Disney marketing, at the time, did not know how to sell it, as it was not a Princess movie.
You are right, the second one should be forgotten completely 🙂
I really hope this gets a UK release, though I have a feeling it won’t, like Treasure Planet. I LOVE this and Treasure Planet. Just a shame I have this feeling that I’ll have to import it- good job blurays are region free!
If you have the two-Dvd version of “Lost Continent”, hold onto it!
Most of the special features on it, including a “visual commentary”, and other goodies didn’t make it to the blu-ray!
