Each year, Universal Orlando builds anticipation for its annual Halloween Horror Nights event with a variety of inventive teasers leading up to the full reveal of what haunted houses and scare zones guests will encounter. The specifics of this year’s event are buried somewhere in the concepts of fate, chance, and luck.
We recently received a sealed envelope in the mail, marked by the Halloween Horror Nights 21 logo and pressed shut by a “21” seal.
Inside was a single playing card with a quote, adorned by skulls and horseshoes:
“Fate leads the willing, and drags along the reluctant.” – Seneca
The quote seems to be more significant to the theme of Halloween Horror Nights 2011 than the person who said the quote, though Seneca, a Roman philosopher and statesman, was compelled to commit suicide for a conspiracy he may not have actually been a part of.
Building on this theme of fate, luck, and chance, Universal Orlando has focused on the notion of a rabbit’s foot, with an additional quote posted to their Facebook page and on Twitter
“Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit.” – R.E. Shay
Emphasizing this quote, a somewhat gruesome video was uploaded shortly thereafter:
(As is pointed out in the end, no rabbits were harmed in the making of this video.)
But it seems fate isn’t so friendly. So what does fate have in store for guests visiting Halloween Horror Nights 21? Beyond the announced haunted house based on The Thing and a teased image of another house, most of the event details still remain a mystery. Universal has promised to send out more cards similar to the one above, each week leading up to September 1. Perhaps then we will know exactly what Lady Luck plans for those who attend when the event begins on September 23.
