In the latest of a series of Disney Parks Blog posts, Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald has revealed C-3PO will be taking the helm of the Star Tours Starspeeder 1000 when the Star Wars-based attraction reopens in 2011.

Disney previously introduced the new AC-38 (“Ace”) character on their blog, but have now let it be known that George Lucas and the rest of the team working on the ride’s update decided that while the AC-38 droid will begin as the pilot of the ride through the Star Wars universe, C-3PO will actually take control by the time the attraction begins.

And as a teaser, Fitzgerald let on that the former Star Tours pilot, Rex, will be seen somewhere in the new version of the ride.

According to the blog, Imagineers are installing new Audio-Animatronics figures into the Starspeeder cabins at Disneyland this week, followed by them showing up at Disney’s Hollywood Studios next month.
