The Zorro series of movies, starring Antonio Banderas as the suave Zorro/Alejandro Murrieta may be back on the silver screen again despite not having a film come out recently within its franchise. Banderas has not graced the screen as the beloved character since 2005’s The Legend of Zorro, the sequel The Mask of Zorro (1998) that began the iconic Zorro franchise. But if the Spanish native and Shrek-franchise Puss In Boots (2011) star has anything to say about it, a certain web-slinging actor might just find himself with a different mask.

Shrek

Created by Johnston McCulley and directed by Martin Campbell, The Mask of Zorro debuted in the late ’90s to critical and commercial success, cementing one Antonio Banderas in cultural relevance as the masked crusader, Zorro. The story follows on in a sense from the 1920s’ silent Western films like The Mark of Zorro (1920), featuring a masked man who took on a secretive vigilante role in 19th century Spanish California, saving commoners and indigenous peoples of the area from corrupt officials and other dastardly villains.

In the 1998 version starring Banderas, the mantle of Zorro is passed along from Anthony Hopkins’ older character, Don Diego de la Vega — a nod to those earlier films and the original pulp fiction character. This sets the precedent for the “Zorro” title to be passed along in the first place — not unlike other superhero mantles such as DC’s Batman or Marvel Studios’ Captain America (yup, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has replaced Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) as Cap). Along for this classically ’90s, swashbuckling ride are Catherine Zeta-Jones as Elena Montero, Stuart Wilson as Don Rafael Montero, Matt Letscher as Captain Harrison Love, Tony Amendola as Don Luiz, Pedro Armendáriz, Jr. as Don Pedro, and Victor Rivers as Joaquin Murrieta.

Speaking exclusively to Comicbook.com, Antonio Banderas now addresses the possibility of a Zorro reboot — including the passing of the Zorro torch:

Yes, I would, I would consider that possibility, why not? If they called me to do ‘Zorro,’ I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch.

Who does Antonio Banderas have in mind, however? The answer has sparked some heavy debate.

Recently, the 62-year-old actor has come forward with his opinion on who may take on the role of Zorro — and according to Variety‘s coverage, it was Tom Holland’s performance in the recent Uncharted (2022) film that inspired these words:

I did ‘Uncharted’ with him, and he’s so energetic and fun. He’s got this spark, too. Why not?

And with those words, the internet caught fire — as did several other celebrities who pitched their own ideas.

Many expressed their opinion about this decision of Banderas’, with Twitter user Troy Lundquist commenting on the choice of British native Holland taking the role of a Mexican hero in early America/California:

… I’m sorry, you want the British white kid to be the Mexican hero?

While @hatorl concurs, offering many other possible casting options, including recent Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) star Tenoch Huerta Mejía (Namor):

In a world of Pedro Pascal, Diego Luna, Óscar Isaac, Tenoch Huerta, Gael Garcia Bernal and so many more… Antonio Banderas chose a British white boy… 🤦🏻‍♀️

Celebrities also began replying to the articles and general debate. Vico Ortiz, a Puerto Rican actor who stars as the popular Jim Jimenez in HBO’s wildly popular pirate office comedy/rom-com, Our Flag Means Death. The period comedy features (ex?) co-Captains Blackbeard/Edward Teach (Taika Waititi) and The Gentleman Pirate/Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), and is not too far removed from Zorro in the “swashbuckling in flowy shirts and wide-brimmed hats”, and “time period” department:

But how about… me? 😏

Fan Erin Christian shared the following Zorro-like images of Ortiz, saying:

I mean, yes please

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new Falcon Danny Ramirez, who will replace Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, also addresses Banderas:

  Antonio Banderas let’s talk…

It’s safe to say there is no lack of willing Latino actors willing to take on the symbolic role of Zorro — but only time will tell if we’ll actually see Spider-Man take on another masked hero.

American musician Ray Parker Jr. is nothing short of a living legend. There might be no other song for a movie that’s as well-known as “Ghostbusters”, which helped make lines from the 1984 film of the same name, such as “Who ya gonna call?“, even more iconic, while also creating its own, such as “I ain’t afraid of no ghost“.

However, in a recent interview with Cinema Blend, while discussing his appearance on this year’s The Masked Singer on Fox, in which he sang Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me”, Parker was asked about his chart-busting 1984 song. But his answer was surprising, as he revealed that he thinks the films might be trying to move away from the iconic track.

“It seems like after the original Ghostbusters film that they’ve been trying to bury the song” Parker said. “They don’t really use the song like I thought they were going to use it. I would think they would use it at the beginning or like the library scene to get the crowd up and cheering the song, but for some reason, they keep trying to get some — they keep wanting some new music. So, I’m not sure.”

The song bookends both Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), while instrumental segments of the song can be heard throughout the films. In the 1989 sequel, it’s also played at a kids’ birthday party, where Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) and Dr. Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) have been hired as entertainers (this scene canonizes the song within the movies).

A re-recorded version is used in the controversial reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016), although that film has a cover version by American rock band Fall Out Boy. The original song is also used in the closing scene in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), and previously inspired the title tracks for animated shows The Real Ghostbusters (1986) and Extreme Ghostbusters (1997).

Needless to say, the Ghostbusters franchise has become synonymous with the hit number one song “Ghostbusters”, which was nominated for Best Original Song at the 57th Academy Awards. Cinema Blend told Parker that, for fans, it’s “hard to disconnect” the song from the films, to which Parker replied:

“Yeah, that’s what people tell me. But if you think about it, the song is only in its original form up front in the very first Ghostbusters film in ’84. After that, they’ve been trying not to use the song.”

Related: 5 Things the Controversial ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot Gets Right

Maybe Parker has a point. While the song has reappeared many times since the original 1984 film (even in 2009’s Ghostbusters: The Video Game), it has been used less and less. Here’s to hoping that next year’s Ghostbusters 4 (2023) decides to use the iconic track to its full potential. After all, there’s always room for Ray Parker Jr.’s classic (just like there’s always room for jello).

As per the Ghostbusters/Sony Pictures website, here’s the synopsis for Ghostbusters: Afterlife:

From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan.

It’s been a while since Freddy Krueger haunted our screens. The last time we saw the razor-gloved “dream demon” was in Platinum Dunes’ 2010 reboot, which turned out to be a nightmare for the studio in its own right, following poor box office returns and critical receptions.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) is the first and only reboot in the series, and the 10th installment in the Elm Street franchise, following the six main films, the franchise-crossover event Freddy vs. Jason (2003), and the very unusual Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994).

Despite the fact that we have a Freddy Krueger film that also features Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise, the 1994 film by Wes Craven is easily the most stand-out entry in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series. But what is it that sets it apart from the other films?

Well, it’s not set in space — the film actually takes place outside the Elm Street universe — in other words, our world, where Freddy is a fictional character. The film revolves around Heather Langenkamp, who plays Nancy Thompson in the Elm Street films, but this time plays herself.

Heather becomes plagued with nightmares about her young son Dylan Porter (Mike Hughes), but it soon becomes apparent that an entity in the form of Freddy Krueger has emerged from the Elm Street films, and is about to blur the lines between fiction and reality.

And now, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare is getting a sequel! A fan-made film titled Dylan’s New Nightmare (2023), which sees the return of Miko Hughes as Dylan Porter, and Freddy Krueger himself, this time played by Dave McRae, recently shared some new images.

The film is directed by Cecil Laird of The Horror Show YouTube channel and takes place 25 years after Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, to find Dylan Porter trying to survive in the world of Hollywood, when he discovers that Freddy Krueger has returned to haunt his nightmares.

Several new images were shared exclusively with Bloody Disgusting by the indie production company Womp Stomp Studios, as the film recently wrapped production. While Dylan’s New Nightmare is an unofficial sequel, having Miko Hughes reprise his role makes it feel canon.

A brand-new Jurassic Park video game is currently in the works from creator Krenautican, and it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, as it has the same spirit as the original 1993 film of the same name from director Steven Spielberg — something its five sequels failed to capture.

Jurassic Park Operations (TBA) is a fan-made first-person survival shooter made in the PlayStation-exclusive creation suite Dreams. And recently, an all-new reveal trailer was uploaded to YouTube, which will leave you feeling like you’ve seen real dinosaurs!

Check out the Jurassic Park Operations trailer below:

The creator has made a number of video game-style Jurassic Park-themed videos, but as you can see, this new game looks like it’s been “spared no expense”. In fact, the dinosaurs look less like video game-created creatures and those of the more genetically-engineered variety!

With voiceover-dialogue by John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) and Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) borrowed from Jurassic Park (1993), the trailer shows a ton of dinosaurs from Velociraptor to Tyrannosaurus Rex, as well as several scenes from the film re-created in virtual form.

There are also many Isla Nublar locations on display — some familiar, some not so much. Those of the more surprising kind aren’t actually from the 1993 film — one is actually the Pterosaur Aviary from the novel “Jurassic Park” (1990) by Michael Crichton, upon which the film is based.

Another location is the popular real-world attraction Jurassic Park River Adventure from the Universal Studios theme park resorts, and their dinosaurs look a lot less animatronic this time around (“there are no animatronics in Jurassic Park“, as Hammond would say!).

While you might turn your nose at the fact that this is a fan-made video game, like the original 1993 film, it appears to strike that perfect balance of wonder and terror, while also delivering some truly claustrophobic indoor environments from the film.

Unfortunately, there’s currently no release date for Jurassic Park Operations, however, it does state on Krenautican’s Discord server that a full demo could be out early next year “at the latest”. For now, Jurassic World Dominion (2022) will have to keep us entertained!

This Thanksgiving weekend box office has provided The Walt Disney Company with good and bad news for the entertainment giant.

strange-world-worst-rating

As Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) continues to perform nicely with an estimated five-day total of $65 million, the Disney Animation premiere of Strange World (2022) is turning out to be one of the worst disappointments in the studio’s history.

Projected for an already poor opening of $30 million, Strange World will be lucky to hit $20 million for the extended period after making just $11.2 million between Wednesday and Friday. The film has a reported production budget of $120-130 million and will be lucky to break even.

The film is facing the worst Audience Score in the Studio’s entire animation history, receiving a “B” rating on CinemaScore from moviegoers. This is now the worst rank for a Disney Animation film ever and the only one to drop below an “A-.“

Between 2016 and 2019, the Thanksgiving box office was lifted by a strong opening from a new Disney animated movie. With Strange World failing to carry that load, overall grosses for the weekend box offices are set to finish at $137 million, below the $142 million earned last Thanksgiving at the onset of the COVID-19 Omicron wave, with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever contributing about 48% of that overall gross.

As we stated earlier, the film has been surrounded by controversy anyway, being banned in around 20 different international markets due to the film’s reliance on LGBTQIA+ topics. These limitations have only further hurt the film’s box office results.

Not every film release for Disney can be a blockbuster, but a performance like this can’t come at a worse time. The Walt Disney Company faces several challenges as newly reappointed CEO Bob Iger takes over for former CEO Bob Chapek.

The Land Before Time (1988) is an animated classic that has captured the hearts of many over the decades. And despite the fact it’s not a Disney movie, it went on to inspire the likes of The Lion King (1994), as well as Disney’s first computer-animated feature film Dinosaur (2000).

Executive-produced by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, and produced and directed by Don Bluth, the film spawned an entire franchise, with 13 direct-to-video musical sequels, a television series, video games, soundtracks, and countless forms of merchandise.

However, despite having so many sequels and other follow-ups, The Land Before Time is often overshadowed by Disney animated classics, largely those that dominated the ’80s and ’90s, such as The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and The Lion King.

These three films, along with many other Disney animated classics, have since been re-created in live action (The Little Mermaid will be released in 2023), which have helped to popularize their respective franchises even more. But will The Land Before Time ever get a live-action remake?

While many fans of the beloved classic would be against such an idea, it would be wonderful to see Littlefoot, his friends, and the dark prehistoric world they inhabit, brought to life with the same technology used to turn The Lion King (2019) into a living, breathing photorealistic world.

When it comes to charm, there’s no contest between the remake and the 1994 classic, but that didn’t stop the new film from grossing over $1.6 billion worldwide. There’s even a new installment on the way, in the form of a live-action prequel titled Mufasa: The Lion King (2024).

With all that said, it’s unlikely The Land Before Time will get a live-action remake, largely because it isn’t a Disney movie. Not only that, but some view the computer-animated Disney film Dinosaur as a remake of sorts, as it has a very similar plot and setting.

For now, we’ll just have to make do with the original animated classic — which is in no way a bad thing. Deep down, though, we’d love to see a live-action remake of The Land Before Time, if only for an epic rendition of the film’s title track/score “If We Hold On Together” by Diana Ross!

As per Universal Pictures, here’s the official synopsis for The Land Before Time:

Embark on a journey into an enchanting prehistoric adventure with dinosaur pals Littlefoot, Cera, Spike, Ducky and Petrie in this acclaimed animated classic for the entire family.

In a long-ago age of rumbling volcanoes and perilous earthquakes, a young brachiosaurus named Littlefoot suddenly finds himself on his own. Setting out to find the lush feeding grounds of the legendary Great Valley, he meets up with four other young dinosaurs who agree to join his quest.

On their daring trek across a landscape filled with excitement and danger, the brave little band encounters hungry predators and daunting challenges as they discover new lessons in life and the importance of teamwork.

Presented by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, with direction by Don Bluth (An American Tail), The Land Before Time is a brilliantly imaginative, delightfully animated tale of friendship, loyalty and love, certain to capture the hearts of viewers young and old.

It’s looking like Ben Schwartz will be back to voice our favorite blue hedgehog, as he talked about Sonic 3’s release coming out on Twitter.

Ben wrote: HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! #SonicMovie3 IS COMING TO THEATRES ON DECEMBER 20, 2024!!! AHHH!!!”

With the success of the first two Sonic movies, a third one was in the bag.

What exactly will the movie be about we don’t know. However, the post credit scenes hinted at Shadow the Hedgehog. So we’re guessing that is a very big hint on what it’ll be about.

It’s currently unknown whether Colleen O’Shaunnessey and Idris Elba will return to voice Tails and Knuckles, but it feels like that’s already a for sure thing.

The official announcement for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 came out via Twitter earlier this summer.

@SonicMovie tweeted: Running faster, flying higher, and punching harder. #SonicMovie3 hits theatres on December 20, 2024.”

This isn’t the first video to be turned into a feature film recently.

Our favorite New York plumbers is also getting their own spin. Mario and Luigi will be making their newest film debut on April 7th, 2023.

A review of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 described it perfectly.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 2 improves upon its predecessor in many ways. It feels more attuned to the Sonic lore than ever before, and fans of the games should have a great time seeing their favorite characters so lovingly recreated on the big screen.”

“Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are a ton of fun, as is Jim Carrey’s wonderfully over-the-top reprisal of Dr. Robotnik. It’s overall a sweet, funny, and action-packed ride that fully embraces its video game roots.”

The movie stars Emily (Chabert) who goes home for the holidays to find that her parents have gone on a trip of their own.

When Emily unexpectedly spends the holidays alone at her parents’ house, their HOA insists that she participate in its many Christmas festivities.

Emily is escaping to her parent’s home after a “pre-holiday break up.” Emily thought she had a date for the holiday parties and activities. She even thought that this relationship had a future.

Now, she wants to be a couch potato and watch holiday movies and drink cocoa. She needs to just be alone and regroup.

However, now her holiday will be spent alone. That is because her folks are going out of town for the holidays. Thinking she can now relax; she has to answer the door.

Jared (Wes Brown) her childhood friend is at the door. He has enlisted her to get up off of the couch and start participating in the various activities of the HOA. This is the very HOA that her parents originally founded.

Turns out, Jared may still be very charming, but he is not so fun. He has issued her citations for the lack of holiday decor. The neighborhood has “strict standards.” Emily’s home is a Christmas decor failure.

Now, Emily has to work off the citations. Before long, Emily and the neighbors band together to plan and decorate in the most over-the-top way possible. Christmas has exploded. Moreover, they are all having a blast working together and enjoying the holiday season.

Reluctant to have anything to do with it, Emily eventually joins in and creates many new Christmas memories with some of her old childhood friends.

Filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah, the movie is about as picturesque as it can get.

While this is Lacey’s 12th Christmas movie, which always seems to be a success, Falling for Christmas is Lindsay Lohan’s first.

DreamWorks Animation has always had an interesting relationship with The Walt Disney Company, and now perhaps it’s even more apparent.

Recently, the animation company DreamWorks Animation Studios has come forward with a new logo redesign — and it might feel rather familiar to some. The company is known for its many animated feature film franchises, many of which show up within the new logo, namely the DreamsWorks movies The Bad Guys (2022), How to Train Your Dragon (2010), Kung Fu Panda (2008), The Boss Baby (2017), Trolls (2016), and finally the Shrek (2001) franchise — in that order.

The Walt Disney Company has a rather colorful history with DreamWorks Animation Studios, as the very founding of DreamWorks came about in an attempt to explicitly create a rival animation house to Walt Disney Animation Studios. The company began as DreamWorks SKG — where SKG stood for the initials of director and producer Steven Spielberg, former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg, and music executive David Geffen. These three had come together after Katzenberg’s exit from The Walt Disney Company, following a perceived snub from then-CEO Michael Eisner and internal tensions with Walt Disney’s nephew, Roy E. Disney. DreamWorks Animation Studios is currently a subsidiary of Universal Pictures, under NBCUniversal, making it a Comcast company.

Notably, DreamWorks’ 2-Dimensional (2D) projects that got the company its start are not present, including the much-lauded DreamWorks film The Prince of Egypt (1998), and even The Road to El Dorado (2000) — eschewing those in favor of more recent moneymakers, the contemporary jokes-filled 3D animated film Trolls and Trolls 2: World Tour / Trolls World Tour (2020) franchise, as well as The Boss Baby and The Boss Baby 2 / The Boss Baby: Family Business (2021). Other notable DreamWorks movies missing at the Madagascar franchise and anything from Shark Tale (2004) or Bee Movie (2007) animated films.

The official DreamWorks Twitter account shared the new logo with the world, and announced that it would be coming together with Puss In Boots: The Last Wish (2022) to cinemas November 26. However, the new logo might just remind some of… another animated logo.

What the new DreamWorks logo refresh ACTUALLY reminds you of

Does anyone remember The Wonderful World of Disney?

Tinkerbell opens the Wonderful World of Disney

It was a program that began all the way back in 1954, in the days of Walt himself — the classic Disney anthology series showcased a variety of Disney films over the years, and played on various television networks for audiences young and old. The animated logo featuring Tinkerbell leaving behind a trail of magic pixie dust as she weaves through different Disney properties against a starry sky background is a recognizable and nostalgic image for many.

As the show matured, design elements may have evolved, but the heart of the concept always stayed the same, beginning with (and returning to) the company’s iconic symbol. It was the symbol of magic, dreams and imagination — in Disney’s case, through the character of Tink and the castle– greeting and interacting with all kinds of Disney favorites and finishing viewers with the iconic image of the Disney castle. That entire design is frightfully similar to the DreamWorks’ new animated logo — magical pixie dust effect in the night sky, and all.

Except DreamWorks utilizes their “kid fishing on the moon” symbol, instead. This choice by DreamWorks to invoke the nostalgia factor of a competitor’s image and branding might seem like an odd choice — but it is one that could still work in DreamWorks’ favor. It’s known that despite their prowess at filmmaking, the clear fact is that Disney and its properties hold a firm grasp on the current media landscape, as well as many peoples’ childhoods — and it is arguably stronger, and far more prolific than the hold that DreamWorks’ properties have on the general public. With how calculated brand designs are nowadays, it would not be a surprise that DreamWorks is looking for just a small slice of the perennial “Disney-branding” pie — while also featuring DreamWorks-beloved characters like Jack Black’s Kung Fu Panda, Po.

Amazon has already done this with movies like Manchester by the Sea (2016), The Big Sick (2017), and Sound of Metal (2019), giving the studio awards and praise. With other studios like Warner Bros. Discovery and Marvel Studios constantly releasing a slew of movies into theaters, it’s not a bad idea to bring more movies to the big screen when they eventually end up on Prime Video.

Unlike Warner Bros. or Disney, Amazon hasn’t faced any severe changes that might hinder the number of projects they can make. After the Discovery Merger, Warner Bros. has been forced to reduce the amount of content they can release in a year due to financial limitations, while Disney is trying to regain their prominence in the entertainment industry after having one of the worst years ever.

While Disney might have Bob Iger again, Amazon plans to charge forward with a bold plan to have a presence at the box office. According to Bloomberg, Amazon plans to make 12 to 15 movies every year for theatrical release, which is why they have 1$ Billion set aside for these projects.

If this plan is successful, Amazon could really be a competitor for Disney and Warner Bros. in the future as the company continues to push forward with new well-known IPs. Amazon might not have Star Wars, Marvel, or even DC, but they make sure to use the projects they do have wisely.

Rings of Power is a great example as the series is getting a budget allowing any moment in the story to get the necessary amount of time and money to make it possible. Both Warner Bros. and Disney haven’t done the best in this way as they give their series enough money to make their show passable. Disney+ has garnered a nasty reputation around rushing their series and having too small of a budget for their shows.

If anything, both Disney and Warner Bros. should keep an eye on Amazon because this plan could make the company a bigger competitor in the entertainment industry.
