Guests will now find new characters from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever making their Disney Cruise Line debut during Marvel Day at Sea, starting January 2023.

These characters include the new Black Panther and Okoye, general of the Dora Milaje. We recently reported that next year’s Marvel Day at Sea would have the largest collection of Super Heroes and Villains from Marvel onboard the Disney Dream, and we’re excited to see that these Black Panther characters will now join the ranks of these other Marvel characters.

What a few weeks it’s been for The Walt Disney Company.  From the drama in the c-suite shakeup to disappointing earnings results, this has been quite the drama for the entertainment drama. Just yesterday, Disney released their annual report.

One glaring fact in the filing from Tuesday is that Disney said it anticipates Iger will initiate “organizational and operating changes,” noting that while the plans were in the early stages, they could include structural changes to Disney’s media and entertainment distribution segment.  This will most likely result in impairment charges.

Here are some other factoids we also discovered:

  • In 2021, Disney had about 190,000 employees. A year later, that number has increased to 220,000.
  • According to the Annual Report, Disney owns three more acres in Anaheim than last year. This could mean a potential expansion of the Disneyland Resort in the next decade.
  • The annual report highlighted the recently purchased Disney Cruise Line ship: “In November 2022, the Company purchased a partially completed ship for an amount that is not material. Disney Cruise Line will incur the cost to complete construction with total costs anticipated to be less than our current fleet.”
  • Disney plans to deliver the Disney Treasure cruise ship during the 2025 fiscal year.
  • Disney’s second island destination will be located on Eleuthera (550 acres) at Lighthouse Point.
  • In this year’s Annual Report, Disney Studios expects to release 50 movies and series. Last year, they released only 40 titles.
  • Disney plans on increasing its capital expenditure projects by 37% in fiscal 2023 compared to fiscal 2022.

This certainly gives us more color on what Disney’s future looks like.

What factoid do you find most exciting?

According to the news site Capital, Disney only shelled out $41 million for the unfinished Global Dream, which was around 75% finished while under construction at MV Werften in Germany. At the start of 2022, the shipbuilder MV Werften filed for bankruptcy and was forced to liquidate the assets placed on the construction site.

The initial cost for Global Dream is estimated to be around $1.8 billion to construct, leaving Disney with plenty of wiggle room to enhance the cruise ship while still coming in under cost for what will be its newest member of the Disney Cruise Line fleet. At a $41 million price, that’s just over two percent of the original ship’s estimated cost.

Disney expects to partner with shipbuilder Meyer-Werft. The two have worked on several other ships in the past. Meyer-Werft, in the short term, will take over operations of the former MV Werften shipyard in Wismar to complete and outfit the new ship.

Based on the financial filings from Disney, the company is expected to spend another $1 billion in completing the construction of the cruise. In the SEC filings, Disney also states, “total costs are anticipated to be less than our recent fleet additions,” noting the cost is “not material.”

Disney Cruise Line mentioned the “acquisition of a partially completed ship that will bring the magic of a Disney Cruise Line vacation to new global destinations” when they announced the purchase. When Guests plan a vacation aboard any of Disney’s cruise ships, they can expect to have a lot of fun, eat a lot of delicious food, and enjoy a relaxing trip across numerous destinations. One of tehse destinations is Castaway Cay.

Castaway Cay is The Walt Disney Company’s private island, exclusively accessible to Disney Cruise Line Guests and as a Disney Fairytale Weddings venue.

This island is exclusive to Disney Cruise Line Guests and has become a big reason why people choose to travel wit Disney in the first place.

Disney’s newest island, Lighthouse Point, is currently under development. For now, Guests on Disney Wish, Disney Fantasy, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, and Disney Magic can only visit Castaway Cay and other non-Disney destinations. Recently, a discovery was made regarding former Disney CEO Bob Chapek and his “relationship” to the island.

For those who may not know, Bob Chapek was honored on the island in a very unique way. The side of a building claims Chapek Was a “Master Ship Builder,” a fun way for Disney Imagineers to reference the CEO. However, Bob Chapek is no longer Disney’s acting CEO, meaning the sign was out of date.

Now, there is no trace left of the sign. This news was shared in a tweet from Scott Sanders (@TheDCLBlog):

GONE, GONE, GONE #PumpHouse1Watch is OVE

Fans had been discussing and “taking bets” on how long it would take Disney to remove the sign. Considering it’s only been about a week since Chapek was fired, we’re pretty surprised the sign is already gone.

An image of what the sign used to look like, as well as one honoring Bob Iger, can be seen down below:

Iger is acting as CEO effective immediately, and his term will officially end on December 31, 2024. To dig a little deeper, we also found out the exact circumstances surrounding Disney’s decision.

According to reports, Disney says that it “exercised its right to terminate without cause” the employment of Bob Chapek, essentially confirming Chapek was indeed “fired” more or less. “Mr. Chapek will receive the separation benefits payable in accordance with the terms of his previously disclosed employment agreement.”

A small fire broke out aboard the Disney Wish late Wednesday evening. Flames could be seen emerging from a speaker to the right of the ship’s “Funnel Vision” screen. This is located on deck 9 of the ship.

Guests began to report seeing smoke, but flames quickly appeared as well and started to grow in size. It is believed that a short circuit caused the fire.

You can see a photo of the incident shared by a Guest on Twitter:

Emergency crews quickly responded, and parts of Deck 9 and 10 were evacuated to make sure Guests were safe and away from any danger.

The accident occurred on the night of Disney Cruise Line’s Pirate Night, an event where Guests are encouraged to dress up like a pirate as well as enjoy some great entertainment.

You can get a closer look at the small fire thanks to a tweet from Theme Park This Podcast (@ThemeParkThis):

Thankfully, this incident did not cause any trouble or delays for Disney Wonder. It’s important to note that Disney takes extra precautions to ensure Guests are as safe as possible, meaning Guests are not allowed to bring fireworks, flares, any combustible liquids such as liquid oxygen, candles, electric blankets, electric irons or steamers, hot plates, heating pads or holiday light strings aboard.

Coincidentally, quite a larger fire broke out at Walt Disney World just the other day.

The Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy was brought to a halt on Sunday, November 20, 2022, after an incident at sea left four people dead, according to reports.

While the Disney Cruise Line’s fleet of ships is renowned for its world-class service and Disney experience, like the theme parks, there are times when the real world seeps into that Mickey Mouse magic. Unfortunately, in a tragic incident in the ocean south of Florida, a migration vessel capsized and the Disney Fantasy stopped to aid the search for the victims.

Approximately two hours ago, the U.S. Coast Guard Seventh District announced that there had been an incident 50 miles off the coast of the Little Torch Key in the Florida Keys. @USCGSoutheast said:

The Coast Guard expanded:

4 ppl reportedly drowned immediately upon capsizing. Some of the rescued wore #lifejackets, saving their lives in 6-8 foot seas & 30 mph winds. #SAR #DontTaketoTheSea @USEmbCuba

As the Coast Guard aided those in need, the Disney Cruise Line Ship, the Disney Fantasy, was also brought to a halt to help with the rescue.

@ThemeParkExpres tweeted from the scene, but at the time it seems that those aboard the Disney Fantasy were not aware of why their voyage had been halted:

Disney Fantasy has come to a full stop and coast guard is circling planes overhead. Word on the street is someone or something is in the water of concern. #DisneyCruise #DisneyFantasy #DisneyCruiseLine

In the last few minutes, reporter Scott Gustin (@ScottGustin) confirmed that the Disney Fantasy had been stopped in order to aid in the incident that took place off the coast of the Keys. He wrote:

The @USCGSoutheast says at least 4 people drowned about 50 miles off Little Torch Key after a homemade vessel capsized. Several were rescued. The Disney Fantasy was in the area and stopped to support the search.

At this time there has not been any news about the incident directly from The Walt Disney Company. The Disney Cruise Line fleet is made up of the Disney Fantasy, Disney Dream, Disney Wonder, Disney Magic, and the new triton-class, Disney Wish. The company announced recently that they had purchased a new ship, the Global Dream.

Earlier this summer, Disney Wish headed out on its inaugural sailings. Just months later, at D23 Expo, Disney Cruise Line announced the introduction of an all-new ship to its fleet, Disney Treasure.

Guests currently can visit one Disney-owned private island, Castaway Cay. But they will soon have another. The Walt Disney Company is making significant progress on Lighthouse Point, a $400 million private island.

Additionally, Disney Cruise Line recently removed all of its COVID-19 vaccination and testing requirements and reinstated in-person pre-sailing muster drills. Previously, Disney reportedly lost thousands of dollars in revenue to cruise ships with fewer regulations.

Today, Disney Cruise Line confirmed swirling rumors that they would purchase the unfinished German ship, Royal Dream. In a Disney Parks Blog post, Disney announced that the purchase was complete.

Royal Dream will be renamed and reimagined by Walt Disney Imagineers. Unlike Disney Fantasy, Disney Dream, Disney Wish, Disney Wonder, and Disney Magic, the ship will begin its career outside the United States. From Disney Parks Blog:

The new ship, to be based outside the United States, will feature innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that set Disney Cruise Line apart. The exterior will be adorned in the iconic, Mickey Mouse-inspired colors of the fleet, complete with signature red funnels.

The 208,000-gross-ton ship is expected to be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available. Disney Cruise Line expects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members.

Construction will be completed at the former MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, under the management of Meyer Werft, the Papenburg-based company that built the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish.

More information about the ship’s maiden voyage and exact amenities will be announced later. According to Nexstar reporter Scott Gustin, this acquisition doesn’t impact the development of an unnamed Triton Class ship, expected to sail in 2025:

The poster explained more about what happened on the cruise ship:

Fantasy stopped dead in the water on Nov 10 around 11 pm to check out this adrift boat. Seemed to be broken in half and abandoned. After 20 minutes or so, the bridge turned off their spotlight and we carried along. Incredibly eerie.

The poster also explained that they caught this incident happening while watching Saving Mr. Banks on the veranda, also noting how quickly the ship’s crew was able to slow down and stop the ship altogether.

Reddit user thejellicleball explained the reasoning behind this stop to others in the comments:

Maritime law dictates that if any ship (cargo, cruise, etc) comes across a small craft with what appears to be survivors or refugees at sea, the ship MUST rescue them and bring them aboard, even if they refuse rescue. From there the ship will likely arrange to return the people to where they came from, or drop them at the nearest port. In this case, it’s likely the individuals on this craft were picked up by another ship and the craft was left behind.

User wrenrich also shared the possibility of the boat’s passengers being rescued:

It’s possible this was the boat from the people picked up by the NCL ship a couple of days ago. At least that’s what I’m hoping.

Although many commenters were surprised, others explained that this scenario has also happened when they were also onboard certain Disney cruises, like the Disney Wish. A few of the commenters even remarked that they were onboard the same ship as the poster when this incident occurred.

Other comments discussed the possibility that this boat was smuggling certain goods, while others hoped for the safety of the missing boat passengers and praised the ship’s watch crew for noticing this boat and taking action.

If this experience has shown us anything, it’s to be careful when navigating the ocean. As a few of the post’s commenters noted, the ocean should always be taken seriously, especially at night.

Has anything like this happened to you while on a cruise or on a ship in general? Tell us your experience in the comments!

Over the weekend, Disney Cruise Line resumed in-person safety drills onboard some of their cruise ships. This was reinstated after previous COVID restrictions enabled the need to have this process completed virtually.

These drills, also known as “muster drills,” are a way for Disney Cruise Line to ensure Guests’ safety by making sure Guests know what to do in the event of an emergency. This also complies with U.S. Coast Guard and international safety regulations.

Previously, when there were still COVID concerns onboard, as well as reduced capacity, Guests were able to go to a designated muster station, check in virtually on the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App, and then watch a safety video.

Now, as COVID restrictions are being lifted on the Cruise Lines, this process will once again be done in person, as it started this past weekend on November 12.

Disney Cruise Line announced these changes in a message sent to travel agents and advisors:

We regularly review our processes and have made the decision to reintroduce the in-person assembly drills. All Guests will be required to report to their assigned assembly station in person at the scheduled time on embarkation day, beginning on the following sailings:

  • Saturday, Nov. 12: Disney Dream & Disney Fantasy
  • Monday, Nov. 14: Disney Wish
  • Wednesday, Nov. 16: Disney Wonder
  • Sunday, Nov. 20: Disney Magic

This transition will ensure all Crew Members and Guests are fully aware of our safety procedures in the event of an emergency. The DCL Navigator App will continue to notify Guests of their assigned assembly station, provide directions for getting to their location and share additional safety information with Guests.

Although Disney Cruise Line Guests may hate or feel inconvenienced by these drills, they are vital to keeping everyone safe, as safety is one of Disney’s key tenets.

Per Disney, these Guest Assembly Drills entail the following:

Before departing on each cruise, we hold a mandatory assembly drill for guests, providing important instructions on what would be required of passengers in the event of an actual emergency. Crew services are suspended during the drill, and attendance for guests is required. We use a state-of-the-art automated system to account for guests checked-in at assembly stations.
