On the night she received her BAFTA Fellowship award, head of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy spoke to a BBC reporter. While it was a vocal puff piece–and arguably one much deserved–the topic of Indiana Jones came to the forefront.

We all know that there is a fifth Indiana Jones on the way from Lucasfilm, but not much has been said on the matter.

Reporter: “Now is this a reboot? Will Harrison Ford be involved?”

Kennedy: “Oh, Harrison will be involved. It’s not a reboot. It’s a continuation.”

The Obvious Confirmed

At this point, I understand my audience enough to know that they looked at my headline and the first few lines and are ready to comment some variation of “No duh!” And if I were not writing this article, I’d be right there with you.

Yes, we all figured this out already. Harrison Ford is involved, reprising his role as the renegade archaeologist. In fact, he’s come out to admit it himself.

“Getting the script to where we want it to be…”

But there is some slight news that we can decipher from Kennedy’s interview. She said, “we’re working away, getting the script where we want it to be, and then we’ll be ready to go.” The fifth installment of Lucasfilm’s second-most-iconic franchise has already been pushed back to 2021, but now we can understand why. SOMEBODY is not happy with the script.

According to joblo.com, screenwriter David Koepp spoke out in 2019, basically telling angsty Indy fans, “I’M WORKING ON IT!”

“I’m working on it again,” he said. “We’re still trying. And I think we’ve got a good idea this time. We’ll see.” Yet, almost two fiscal quarters later, and we still have no confirmed clue about what Indy 5 will be about. After all, the film was supposed to start filming last year. Let’s just hope it’s not all because Kennedy is not happy with the script.

Indiana Jones 5 is still scheduled to be released on July 9, 2021. One year later than originally expected.

Speculation Time: Writer’s Overt Hopes for Indy 5

Okay, like most boys my age and older, I grew up idolizing Indiana Jones. But when the time came for me to finally see an Indiana Jones film in theaters, I got a face full of Shia LeBeouf, Cate Blanchett’s only bad role in her career, Ancient Aliens, and disappointment.

But what Kingdom of the Crystal Skull did was it reinvigorated a dormant franchise. It didn’t matter if it was good or not. The sentimental spark of nostalgia was reignited, just like what Silvester Stalone did with Rocky Balboa.

Stay with me on this! Rocky Balboa was weak. It survived only on the nostalgia for the classic original film, and a deeply driven desire to see another Rocky movie in theaters. Yes, it had some great moments, but so did Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. So does every movie. But it got people talking about Rocky again.

Then came Creed, followed by Creed II. Arguably the two greatest Rocky movies since Rocky IV (which is the best one). We can use the same analogy for Star Wars in how much better Attack of the Clones was compared to The Phantom Menace, but I truly believe there is a mirrored relationship between the Indiana Jones and Rocky franchises.

So–looking at these franchises as equally iconic and meaningful–if Rocky Balboa is to Rocky as Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is to Raiders of the Lost Ark, then I don’t see why we shouldn’t expect an epic Creed-level follow-up in the form of Indy 5. Whatever it becomes. But that is my hope and all I can do is hope Lucasfilm delivers.
