It’s been almost a year since Richard Gerth, the beloved greeter at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, passed away at 92 years old. Now, Disney fans everywhere are calling upon Disney to create a memorial in Mr. Gerth’s honor.

Mr. Gerth had greeted guests at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort for over 30 years since 1991. He was a much-loved figure in the Disney community, known for warmly welcoming guests to the resort and even escorting brides to transportation to the Wedding Pavilion on their wedding days. In 2013, he was a recipient of The Walt Disney Legacy Award, which is the highest honor Cast Members can achieve at Disney Parks and Resorts.Disney fans, frequent guests at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, and brides remember Mr. Gerth’s kind nature, and the Disney community was saddened by his passing back in June 2018.

To honor Mr. Gerth’s memory, Disney fans have created a petition asking The Walt Disney Company to build a statue of Mr. Gerth that can be displayed at the Grand Floridian in Walt Disney World. Here’s what the petition reads:

Walt Disney Worlds Grand Floridian Greeter Richard Gerth Memorial Statue

To be delivered to Walt Disney World, Statue for Richard Gerth

Walt Disney World fans and more appropriately Richard Gerth (the Grand Floridian greeter) who recently passed would like to petition WDW to put up a statue of Richard Gerth at the GF to greet guests forever.

At the time of this article’s publication, the petition has received well over 1,000 signatures since it was originally posted on on May 21. The current goal listed on the petition is 2,000 signatures, though we expect that number to grow as more and more Disney fans receive word of the petition.

You can watch a video of Mr. Gerth speaking of his role at The Walt Disney Company below:

If you’d like to sign the petition for Disney to display a Richard Gerth statue at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, you can visit the petition’s website here.

What I think would be really awesome is an award that could be given to greeters (or resort cast members in general), perhaps once a quarter, in his honor, something to remind them the impact that they have on the lives of the people that come home to Disney.

  2. Kristy Mallet

Tried to sign the petition but you can only sign if you are an American. That’s a little short-sighted. Richard was loved by people from all over the world and we would like to show our support for this memorial too!

  3. Elle

His family has made it known that they do not want this, lets respect their wishes as this is probably still difficult for them.

Where do you see that his family doesn’t want this? I am a Grand Nephew of his and I would love to see a statue in his honor there.

      1. Anon

I worked with him. He wouldn’t want attention for him doing his job.

  4. Karen Deleon

I think it’s an awesome idea. I never had the opportunity to meet Richard, but I can tell he touched the lives of many people.

  5. Barbara Strouse

He was a treasure and dearly missed.

  6. Kristie

This is a great idea and Disney should honor such an amazing person. He escorted me on my wedding day and gave it that extra magical Disney touch!!

  7. Jayme

Richard met us on our honeymoon 26 years ago and told us a warm joke about the 3 rings of marriage: the engagement ring, the wedding ring, and then the… suffer-ring. He laughed so sweetly. We sought him out for a photo and conversation every year that we returned. ❤️

  8. Cheryl

Instead of a statue, they should make a butterfly garden near the front entrance.

  9. Jackie

I m happy to hear that. Richard was a beautiful part of our lives, if only in conversations, a wonder man.

  10. Maryann

Great idea consider this my signature

  11. A nice thought but rather disappointing that a politically partisan petition org is being used. Consider iPetitions next time.

What a charming and lovely man he is what disney is all about so sad to hear about his passing! I hope the angels love his music as much as we all did!

He was a Huge part of that extra magic that you experience at Disney. I had the privilege of talking with him a few times during our visits. And he just embodied everything Disney. I hope they will honer him, because he truly was deserving it. We will miss him on our future visits.

They have something in play now call Service from the Heart is a quality award but I’m sure they could come up with something more on the lines of the cast roll , Disney is a amazing place to work why because it’s never work when you love what you do

We visited Grand Floridian for years and each time we made a point to stop and see Richard. He used to hand out roasted chestnuts which reminded us of winters up North. It was amazing and so pleasing to see him love what he does. He loved the guests and I think he loved Disney and tried to make it a special place for all guests. We’ll miss you, Richard!
