Two people sitting over Universal Studios' globe

Two people climbed to the top of the globe outside the entrance to Universal Studios Hollywood on Earth Day in a demonstration for climate change and it resulted in four arrests.

The protesters are members of the Los Angeles chapter of a group of climate change activists called Extinction Rebellion. The Monday afternoon live-stream footage of the protesters’ Earth Day demonstration shows two of the protesters sitting atop the globe and waving green flags that read “climate emergency.” The protesters had allegedly superglued themselves to the globe. Los Angeles Times reports that the LA County Sheriff’s Department had arrested the two protesters who had climbed atop the globe as well as two who were protesting on the ground, and all four are currently facing felony charges.

During the time of the protest, a Universal spokesperson said, “Earth Day demonstrators came to the property unannounced and we are working with law enforcement to have them peacefully removed.”

Take a look at the live stream footage of the demonstration posted to the Extinction Rebellion Los Angeles Facebook page. The footage below shows the protesters atop the globe, as well as the area surrounding the globe, which appears to be blocked off from visitors and patrolled by law enforcement.

One arrest already… clearly more to come…. maybe 100 cops…

The protesters also shared a video of the protest along with a list of the group’s demands for NBC/Universal. The protesters claimed to have “filled the fountain with vegan blood” and proposed the following to NBC/Universal:

We believe NBC/Universal must act decisively to report the transformative change needed to face this emergency together. We urgently propose:
1. That NBC/Universal declares that we are indeed in a Climate and Ecological Emergency – that the extinction of the natural world is happening, that we are facing the collapse of civilization.
2. That NBC/Universal will tell the whole truth about our climate and ecological emergency, including the failure of the US Government to respond with appropriate action/preparedness planning until now.
3. That NBC reject all advertising from fossil fuel corporations, agrees to be zero-carbon by 2025, and publish a public, annual eco-audit of all NBC/Universal operations, including summary of key ecological and carbon data.
4. That NBC only permit think-tank spokespersons or lobbyists on the air to discuss the climate and ecological emergency whose funding is made fully transparent to your viewers in each and every case.

EXTINCTION REBELLION LA NOW AT UNIVERSAL STUDIOS has glued themselves to the globe and filled the fountain with vegan blood. Here are our demands:As the latest IPCC report makes abundantly clear, the threat posed by climate change to life on this planet is immediate, and unprecedented in human history. We believe NBC/Universal must act decisively to report the transformative change needed to face this emergency together. We urgently propose:1. That NBC/Universal declares that we are indeed in a Climate and Ecological Emergency – that the extinction of the natural world is happening, that we are facing the collapse of civilization.2. That NBC/Universal will tell the whole truth about our climate and ecological emergency, including the failure of the US Government to respond with appropriate action/preparedness planning until now.3. That NBC reject all advertising from fossil fuel corporations, agrees to be zero-carbon by 2025, and publish a public, annual eco-audit of all NBC/Universal operations, including summary of key ecological and carbon data.4. That NBC only permit think-tank spokespersons or lobbyists on the air to discuss the climate and ecological emergency whose funding is made fully transparent to your viewers in each and every case. Now is the time to act. To model a sustainable future as a leader on the global stage, to contradict the well-funded, cynical efforts to dispel this matter as a hoax, is a profound legacy for you to leave your grandchildren. We look forward to further discussion, and greatly appreciate your time.
