The Walt Disney Company revealed quite a few teasers at CinemaCon this week, including a possible epic battle scene in the upcoming “Maleficent” sequel.
At the event, Disney shared a behind-the-scenes sneak peek of “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” the second installment following the first film, which premiered back in 2014. While we don’t know much about the plot of the sequel, we do know that the film stars original actresses Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora. And according to Disney’s footage, an all-new character will be joining the film (and possibly giving Maleficent a run for her money).
The behind-the-scenes look at “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” showed both of the original stars alongside Michelle Pfeiffer in what looks like a pretty awesome battle between Pfeiffer and Jolie. Pfeiffer will take on the role of Queen Ingrid who is determined to make Princess Aurora her own adoptive daughter, much to Maleficent’s dismay. The featurette shows Queen Ingrid wanting to unite Maleficent, Princess Aurora, and Philip as a family, although she may have ulterior motives. As we know from the first film, Maleficent and Princess Aurora have developed a close, mother-daughter-like bond, so having a new queen in the picture may not be the best thing for their relationship. And given the sequel’s title (“Mistress of Evil”) we bet someone will face Maleficent’s wrath in the film. The question is, will it be Pfeiffer’s character, or someone else?
We aren’t sure exactly what will transpire in the upcoming film, but we are certainly excited to find out once it hits theaters this October.
Here’s how Disney describes “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”:
A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after “Maleficent,” in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy (Angelina Jolie) and the soon to be Queen (Elle Fanning), as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.
“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” hits theaters on October 18. For more information on Disney’s 2019 film releases, check out our article here.
