“Avengers: Endgame” will be Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee’s final appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joe Russo says.

“Avengers: Endgame” co-director Joe Russo recently shared the news at a media event in India, PinkVilla reports. At the event, Russo revealed that Lee (the writer, editor, and publisher of Marvel Comics known for making cameos in the Marvel films) had likely given his last film cameo during the filming of “Avengers: Endgame,” the final chapter in the current era of Marvel films.

“I believe that [Stan Lee’s] final cameo is in ‘Endgame,’” the director said, “I don’t remember if he was well enough to do the cameo in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’ But it was incredible to work with him.”

Lee passed away in November 2018 at the age of 95, and as Russo states, his declining health may be what prevented him from any more cameos in the MCU films. As GamesRadar points out, before he passed away Lee had made an appearance in all 22 MCU films, in which he has taken on the roles of a crazy mailman and a pick-up driver, been mistaken for Larry King and Hugh Hefner, and even starred as himself. For Marvel Comics and MCU fans alike, Lee’s on-screen appearances are some of the scenes to look forward to the most when watching an MCU film for the first time. Hopefully, the Russo brothers have an epic MCU cameo for Lee that will give the Marvel creator the on-screen finale he deserves.

During his press interview, Russo also shared anecdotes of his time working with Lee. “I grew up on his comic books. Stan Lee was an idol of mine as a kid. To be able to have the opportunity to not only to work under the material he created but to work with him is a childhood dream come true.”

After the heartbreaking scenes of “Avengers: Infinity War,” Lee’s Fall 2018 passing, and the somber trailers of “Endgame,” we’re all but certain the last film in the current MCU saga will be a tearjerker. Add a final on-screen appearance from Lee to the film, and we’ll be running out of tissues. As Russo shared, he isn’t sure if Lee had been able to make a cameo in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” but we haven’t heard so, either. No matter what, it’s clear that Lee will be missed both on-screen and off. And we’re prepared to cheer when we see him soon in “Avengers: Endgame.”
