“Avengers: Endgame” may be Disney’s longest Marvel film

Avengers: Endgame three hours

It’s no question that we’re excited for “Avengers: Endgame” to hit theaters on April 26. But are we excited about a possible three-hour runtime? That’s debatable.

“Avengers” directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed in a recent interview with Collider that “Avengers: Endgame” is currently three hours long, based on the most recent test screenings. “Avengers: Infinity War” was two hours and forty minutes long, so it’s no surprise that the fourth film will be even longer, given its purpose is to wrap up this chapter of the film series. Still, a three-hour runtime would make “Avengers: Endgame” the longest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 11-year history. The Russo brothers shared that there is still editing to be done, but a three-hour film isn’t out of the question. In fact, it may actually be good for the franchise.

In their interview, Joe Russo shared the following:

I think the studio is down with what the best story is. Right now, we think the movie is playing well and we’ve had great responses from our test audiences and we’re feeling very good about where it is. We’re still doing work to it. We’re not done with it. Again, this is a culmination film of 22 movies, it’s a lot of storytelling to work into it. Emotion is an intrinsic part of that to us. When you have to tell a really complicated story and you want strong emotional moments with the characters, it just requires a certain amount of real estate. This one, in particular, feels like three hours worth of real estate.

This isn’t the first time the Russos discussed the probability of a three-hour “Avengers” film. In November of last year, when they said they were about halfway through editing the fourth “Avengers” film, the directors mentioned that it was sitting at around three hours. Although three hours would only make “Endgame” twenty minutes longer than “Infinity War,” it’s still quite a long time to be sitting in a crowded movie theater. That doesn’t seem to bother fans, though, according to the Russo brothers.

“We have screened the movie four times for audiences now,” Anthony Russo said. “For the first three screenings, not a single person got up to go to the bathroom.”

If Disney is willing to release a three-hour Marvel film, it shows just how good they think this film is…and how much will happen during those three hours of screen time. “Endgame” is the film that will not only wrap up the “Avengers” series, but also will tie up loose ends in a culmination of over 20 Marvel films in over a decade. “Avengers: Endgame” has already generated massive excitement from fans all over the world, and if this film is going to be as intense as it sounds, we’re willing to bet that the Marvel Cinematic Universe team needs three hours to wrap up the story. The only question we have is, will three hours be enough time?

By the sound of it, a three-hour “Avengers” film would have to be pretty intense and jaw-dropping for audiences to not want to get up to even use the bathroom in the middle of a film. We bet the film will be just as awesome as it sounds, and with this much hype, it’s got a lot to live up to. For now, we’ll be on the edge of our seats until April 26.
