Trip a Little Light Fantastic

If you haven’t seen Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” yet, what are you waiting for? Spit spot! The new movie arrived in theaters in December, bringing Mary Poppins, music, and magic back to the Banks family. For those who haven’t seen the movie yet (or are not-so-patiently waiting for the home release), Disney shared the full clip of one of the most memorable songs, “Trip a Little Light Fantastic.”

Performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Jack), Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins), Nathanael Saleh, Pixie Davies, and Joel Dawson (the Banks children), along with a huge group of dancing lamplighters, this sequence was incredibly joy-inducing to watch on the big screen. It’s very much like “Step in Time” from “Mary Poppins” (1964) but finds new ways to delight the audience with song and dance. Below, watch the full clip of “Trip a Little Light Fantastic” from “Mary Poppins Returns.”

Later in the movie, “Trip a Little Light Fantastic” is reprised with Dick Van Dyke, who plays Mr. Dawes, Jr. Van Dyke’s cameo includes a bit of toe-tapping from the “Mary Poppins” star, and we’re so happy he brought some of his magic to the new movie. Below, you can enjoy a clip from his appearance.

If Oscar buzz is correct, “Mary Poppins Returns” could earn nominations for Best Original Song (“Trip a Little Light Fantastic”) and Best Original Score, as well as nods for production and costume design. This year’s nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 22.

In the new movie, Mary Poppins returns to Cherry Tree Lane to help a grown-up Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw), his three children, and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer) after the family suffers a personal loss. Along the way, Mary Poppins is joined by her lamplighter friend Jack, her cousin Topsy (Meryl Streep), The Balloon Lady (Angela Lansbury), and Mr. Dawes, Jr. The film also stars Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen and Colin Firth as William Weatherall Wilkins, the new director of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank.
