Disney just announced new changes coming to the Disney Vacation Club resale process this month, and if you’ve been planning to buy into DVC, now is the time to do so.

This year, beginning January 19, only those who purchase DVC points directly from Disney will be able to use their points at the 14 existing and future Disney Vacation Club Resorts. If you purchase DVC points from a DVC reseller and not directly from Disney, your purchase can only be used for the current 14 resorts and not for any future resorts.

In addition to this change, Disney also revealed that those who purchase points for future DVC Resorts from a reseller will be limited to using their points at their home resort. For example, if you purchase points from a resale broker for Disney’s Riviera Resort, you will be restricted to using your points at Disney’s Riviera Resort only, and you will be unable to use your points at any other DVC Resort. These resale process changes only apply to contracts purchased on or after January 19, 2019.

This is a big change for Disney Vacation Club. In the past, purchasing points from a reseller was arguably the same as purchasing directly from Disney. There were no differences in benefits and you were not restricted to the usage of your points, aside from resale points being ineligible for use at Disneyland Resort, Disney Cruise Line, international Disney hotels and Adventures by Disney. Changes to DVC the resale process began a few years ago when those who purchased DVC points from a reseller received less “incidental benefits,” such as no access to Membership Extras and discounts. Now more than ever, DVC is making it harder to say no to purchasing directly from Disney, and purchasing from a reseller is losing its appeal.

Additionally, Disney Vacation Club also recently revealed a price increase. Beginning January 16, the price per point will increase by $6. Now is as good of a time as any to buy into DVC, with changes to the resale market and new price increases. Whether you think purchasing from a reseller is your best option or purchasing directly from Disney is the way to go, there’s no doubt that if you want to become a Disney Vacation Club member, you should do so within the next couple of weeks before these changes go into effect.
