Get out your pitchforks and torches, as Universal Pictures has just greenlit a reboot of “Shrek” and “Puss in Boots” to be spearheaded by “Despicable Me” creator Chris Meledandri.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures has officially given Meledandri the task of creating all-new storylines for everyone’s favorite Ogre in an attempt to bring Shrek and his fierce feline partner Puss in Boots back for a new generation of fans.

As Meledandri is looking to create new stories for these beloved characters, what he doesn’t plan to do is reinvent the famous voice cast behind the original films. The well-known voices behind these characters include the internationally famous Hollywood legends of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas. And according to a profile in Variety, Meledandri is attempting to bring back this original cast for the reboot.

“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations…The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels,” said Meledandri, the founder, CEO, and owner of Illumination Entertainment.

In addition to the famous “Despicable Me” film franchise, Meledandri is also credited with working on Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax,” “Minions,” and its sequel, which is set to hit theaters in 2020, all of which were produced by Illumination.

According to Variety, during the acquisition of DreamWorks Animation by Comcast, it had been rumored that Meledandri would be promoted to oversee DreamWorks Entertainment. However, Meledandri revealed it would have been impossible for him to take on this task while also maintaining a similar level of quality in his films.

“The Grinch,” Illumination’s next movie, opens on November 9, 2018.
