According to Daily Mail, it has been confirmed that Johnny Depp, who originally played the swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, will not be returning for the film series’ potential reboot.

Daily Mail has reported that even though Depp had been the star of the major film franchise for the past 15 years, he has not been asked to join the potential reboot of the film series. Stuart Beattie, the original scriptwriter for the Pirate films, confirmed the news of Depp’s departure from the famous franchise. Stuart Beattie told DailyMail TV: “I think he’s had a great run. Obviously, he’s made that character his own and it’s become the character he’s most famous for now… I think Jack Sparrow will be his legacy. It’s the only character he’s played five times, it’s the character he dresses up in to visit children in hospitals, it’s what he’ll be remembered for.”

Earlier this week, Deadline had broken the news that a possible reboot of the series might be in the works when they revealed the fact that Disney had already met with “Deadpool” writers Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick about possibly writing the script for the new film.

In the same report, Deadline had also mentioned that if the reboot were to be a go, Jerry Bruckheimer would continue to serve as executive producer for the franchise. At the time, it was unknown whether Depp would be returning to the franchise, until it was confirmed today by Daily Mail he wouldn’t.

Depp first appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise when it first hit theaters back in 2003, with its first film “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” This film was followed by four sequels, which in total, grossed over $4.5 billion dollars. This massive turnout at the box office made the film series a large success for The Walt Disney Company.

As of now, Disney has not officially confirmed if there will be a reboot of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series.
