The spooky season arrives at Disneyland Resort today with the start of Halloween Time, and with it comes the 2018 Haunted Mansion Holiday Gingerbread House.

Each fall, the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland Park gets a “Nightmare Before Christmas” makeover with festive decorations courtesy of the Pumpkin King himself, Jack Skellington. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the beloved Tim Burton movie, and it’s also the 18th year for the Haunted Mansion’s gingerbread display.

This year’s house features a “monster movie vibe,” says Tim Wollweber, associate art director for Disney Parks. To set the scene, the team designed a 5-foot spider with glowing eyes and moving legs and mandibles to be suspended above the Grand Hall table in the Haunted Mansion. Below, take a closer look at frighteningly fun details from the 2018 Haunted Mansion Holiday Gingerbread House.

The multicolor spider attempts to make a meal of the gingerbread house and its residents by ripping the house from its foundation and wrapping gingerbread zombies in cocoons to snack on later. Candy cane rebar, sparkling lights, and more gingerbread zombies add to the house’s festively spooky decor.

Disneyland Central Bakery began baking gingerbread for the house over a month ago. The team of 12 pastry chefs, led by Assistant Pastry Chef Christina Orejel, worked together to add icing and fondant to the massive holiday house.

A creepy confection this large requires a lot of ingredients. This year’s house required 90 pounds of gingerbread, 30 pounds of confectioner’s sugar, 10 pounds of white chocolate, and 45 pounds of fondant.

The new gingerbread house is on display throughout Haunted Mansion Holiday, which runs through early January 2019. If you missed last year’s house, which was inspired by Oogie Boogie from “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” take a look in our video below.
