John Williams the last jedi

Composer John Williams has created some of the most iconic film scores in history, including music for each of the main movies in the “Star Wars” saga. However, he says the upcoming “Episode IX” will likely be his last work for the franchise.

Back in January, fans were relieved to hear Williams was expected to score “Episode IX.” Now, in a recent interview with California radio station KUSC, Williams confirmed this will probably be his final contribution to the series. “We know JJ Abrams is preparing one [“Star Wars” movie] now that I will hopefully do next year for him. I look forward it. It will round out a series of nine, that will be quite enough for me,” he said. The ninth “Star Wars” film is due to arrive in theaters in 2019.

Williams has acknowledged the huge popularity of his “Star Wars” scores, though he’s said in the past that “a lot of them are not very memorable.” Plenty of fans and award committees would disagree, however. Williams has won five Oscars for his work, including “Star Wars” (1977), “Jaws” (1975), “Fiddler on the Roof” (1971), “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982), and “Schindler’s List” (1993).

If Williams does hand the “Star Wars” reins to someone else after “Episode IX,” it won’t be the first time we hear another composer’s music in the “Star Wars” universe. In 2016, Michael Giacchino scored “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” In addition, the upcoming “Solo: A Star Wars Story” features a main score by John Powell, but John Williams will contribute to the Han Solo theme for the movie.
