5 tips for kicking off at Walt Disney World’s new FootGolf course

Last month, Disney announced the opening of their brand new FootGolf course at their Oak Trail Golf Course. I had the chance to check it out last weekend and I have to say, it’s a great time.

If you’re unfamiliar with FootGolf, it’s a fast-growing sport that combines soccer and golf, challenging players to kick a soccer ball into a cup. It is played just like golf, only with different equipment.

As is the case with any new experience, you never really know exactly what to expect. I’m here to provide that helpful information so that you can make the most of you first ever FootGolf experience at Disney’s Oak Trail FootGolf Course.

1. Dress Comfortably

One of my biggest questions going into my first FootGolf experiences was what to wear. It is on a golf course, and that typically implies a certain form of etiquette (more on that later), but it’s also a very different kind of sport.

Disney does recommend that you come in proper golf attire, however I will say most of the players I saw did not follow that rule. My advice to you is simply to dress comfortably, whether that’s golf attire or athletic wear is up to you. I personally wore a polo and golf shorts and that worked out perfectly.

You’re going to be active, and doing a lot of walking (a whole lot if you’re like me and not very good at FootGolf). Wear sturdy athletic shoes, as you will be kicking a soccer ball somewhere between 50 and 100 times.

2. Bring Water

FootGolf, like normal golf, is played entirely outdoors. In the Florida heat, doing anything outdoors can be a daunting task. I highly recommend you keep yourself hydrated.

Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course does have several water stations throughout, but it’s always good to keep a drink with you at all times. You don’t want to have to hike back across four holes to get another cup of water.

3. Bug Spray

There are a lot of densely wooded areas and still bodies of water throughout the course. That’s a perfect recipe for mosquitoes and other insects. Bring some kind of bug spray with you to keep from getting swarmed too badly.

Bonus tip: Keeping your ball out of the woods and the water hazards will help keep you away from the bugs as well. Unfortunately, not all of us are so lucky.

4. Be Mindful of Those Around You

Yes, you’re playing a fun, unique game that would seemingly fit well at some sort of tailgate event. However, it’s important to keep in mind that you are still on a golf course and there will likely be people golfing around you (don’t worry, the times are staggered so you won’t be sandwiched between real golfers).

That aforementioned golf etiquette comes into play here. It can be intimidating stepping onto a golf course for the first time without knowing all the rules. Just know that there are people there taking their golf seriously and do your best not to disrupt them. To put it simply, don’t be loud and obnoxious.

5. Have Fun!

As I said, you’re playing a fun and unique game. Just enjoy it! Sure, it can be frustrating (much like regular golf) and odds are you won’t be very good your first time out (mush like regular golf). It’s still a lot of fun and a great way to get out and try something new.

My recommendation is to visit Disney’s Oak Trail FootGolf Course with a group of friends and/or family and just have a good time. And maybe mentally prepare yourself to fish your ball out of the water ahead of time. That will help too.
