Magic Leap, a startup based in Florida, has finally unveiled a mixed reality headset after years of anticipation.

Called Magic Leap One, the sleek goggles are tethered to a powerful pocket-sized computer called the Lightpack and insert lifelike moving people and objects into a person’s real-world view. Rolling Stone was on hand to test Magic Leap One demos, which included virtual live performances, virtual characters that can react to eye contact, and potential theme park experiences.

One demo dropped the user into a science fiction world, playing out a scene augmented with computer-controlled lighting, powerful speakers, and hidden fans. According to Rolling Stone, the experience demonstrated how theme parks can craft rides free of walls and wait times.

Magic Leap, founded in 2011 by Rony Abovitz, has raised $1.9 billion to date. This is the first time the company has shown off a piece of working technology to the public.

Magic Leap will offer the goggles in two sizes, with the option of custom forehead, nose, and temple pads. It may also be possible to have prescription lenses added to the goggles.

There is currently no price or an exact ship date for Magic Leap One, but the company says the goggles will go out sometime in 2018.
