Prison-themed pop-up bar “Alcotraz” invites customers to BYOB for a night of drinking in London ‘jail’

Alcotraz, a new prison-themed bar in London, invites customers to smuggle in alcohol for a night of drinking like a convict.

The latest bar in the themed pop-up trend has received criticism, but the experience is modeled after the legendary Alcatraz in San Francisco. Alcotraz promises to recreate the eerie atmosphere of the prison, which operated from 1934 to 1963.

For £30 per person, guests receive a 1 hour and 45-minute “sentence.” All inmates are given an orange jumpsuit before entering.

The bar’s official website features a letter from “Inmate #88,” who invites guests to smuggle their alcohol of choice into the bar and past the guards. Inmate #88 kept a collection of syrups, juices, and bitters from life before prison, and promises to serve up four delicious drinks using your contraband booze.

The three-month pop-up located at 212 Brick Lane opened on September 28. Reservations are required, and you can book space on the Alcotraz website.

Please note: Alcotraz is for Adult Offenders only, so you must be at least 18 years old to participate. Also, no food is served during your stay.
