I-Drive could be adding streetcars to alleviate traffic around I-Drive 360

Officials of Orange County are planning to conduct a study this fall regarding the potential for streetcars as a possible solution to the traffic problems that consistently face International Drive.

The study will reportedly focus on a two and a half mile stretch of I-Drive, between Sand Lake Road and State Road 528. This stretch of road is significant because it includes the popular entertainment location I-Drive 360.

I-Drive 360 is home to the Orlando Eye, Madame Tussauds Orlando, a variety of dining locations and more.

This seems like a good starting point for the project, should the study prove streetcars to be a viable solution. However, Orange County Planner Alberto Vargas could see streetcars expanding much further than just this stretch of I-Drive. He believes the system could one day possibly reach as far as downtown Orlando or Orlando International Airport.

SeaWorld Orlando is also in the nearby area, so naturally the popular theme park has also taken interest in the potential project.

“We fully support Orange County efforts to improve International Drive transportation options that benefit both our guests and employee ambassadors, and we look forward to the feasibility study results,” the company said in a statement.

Do you think streetcars could be an option to relieve the terribly congested International Drive?
