Disney’s “The Lion King” announces Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, John Kani as Rafiki

The cast of Disney’s upcoming live-action version of “The Lion King” just found a few more stars to add to its roster.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alfre Woodard has signed on to voice Sarabi, the mother of Simba (Donald Glover) and wife of Mufasa (James Earl Jones, reprising his role from the 1994 animated film). Woodard was recently seen in Marvel’s “Luke Cage” on Netflix. Madge Sinclair played the role of Sarabi in the animated film.

In addition, The Wrap is reporting that John Kani has joined the cast as Rafiki, the wise baboon who advises the royal family. Kani is also part of the Marvel family, having recently played King T’Chaka, Black Panther’s father in “Captain America: Civil War.” He’ll also appear in the upcoming “Black Panther” film. Robert Guillaume voiced the memorable character in the original film.

Woodard and Kani join previously announced cast members Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), and John Oliver (Zazu).

Casting for the iconic villain Scar has not been confirmed yet.

The updated “Lion King,” directed by Jon Favreau, arrives in theaters in 2019.
