7 Spell-Binding “Harry Potter” Studies Being Offered at Colleges this Fall

Summer is almost over and it is just about time to register for classes.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing.  This is especially true when you can get college credit for learning about (and from) J.K. Rowling’s magical masterpieces or even enjoy playing quidditch for your school.

This fall, why not add a bit of magic to your studies with some these spellbinding Harry Potter themed courses? ITM spills the magical beans on seven spellbinding selections so you can weave some wizarding wonder into your schedule this fall.

1. “Harry Potter and the Age of Illusion” has been offered for the past several years at Durham University including the 2016-2017 school year. As the 2017-2018 classes have not yet been posted, it is not known if students will again be able to learn about relevance of the Potter phenomenon in today’s society for this year’s schedule.

2. Lawrence University offers a history course, “Thinking about Harry Potter.” Students learn of about Harry Potter lore and it’s “relation to history, legend, and myth; their contested aesthetic merit and ethical values; and their broader social and political implications”

3. Georgetown University, in Washington DC, uses Harry Potter novels as a bridge to study medieval history in their “Knights of Old & Harry Potter” humanities course.  The overall objective of the study is to learn about growing up and finding one’s self.

4-5. Just east of the immersive realm of Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade (Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando), the University of Central Florida offers “Harry Potter Studies”.  This overview of J.K. Rowling’s novels  is part of the English department. The university also includes “the texts of Harry Potter” and other fantasy favorites in its “Religion and 20th Century Fantasy Texts” course.

6. Several Schools actually offer Quidditch as a sports club option.  Florida State University describes the sport: “Quidditch is a co-ed, full-contact sport with a unique mix of elements coming from rugby, dodgeball, and a few other sports. A game is made up of fourteen athletes (7 vs. 7) and while the game can appear chaotic at first, once familiar with the basic rules, Quidditch is an exciting sport to watch and even more exciting to play!”

7. Of course homeschooling is always an option too.  Hogwarts is Here offers free registration and will even send you an acceptance letter (sans owl).  The course material ranges from first year though seventh year with extra-curricular materials also available.  These self-study lessons are only for informative and entertainment, though.  Course credits will not apply in the muggle world.

Professors preaching Potter powered platitudes might just be a reason to go back to school.  Muggle or not, this cauldron full of 7 class connections can cause cranium creativity in the most magical of manners (for muggles that means taking a Potter powered course or two might actually make learning fun); time turner optional.
