Magritte VR Experience inside a giant bowler hat pays tribute to surrealist painter in Belgium

in Technology, Theater

Belgium is celebrating painter René Magritte with a surreal virtual reality homage inside one of his iconic bowler hats.

Magritte was born in Belgium in 1898 and died there in 1967. In his honor, the country has declared 2017 “Magritte Hommage Year” and they’ve set up a Magritte VR Experience at the beach resort Knokke-Heist. Fifty guests at a time can enter the giant bowler hat to take an immersive journey through Magritte’s work.

More than forty of Magritte’s pieces are included in the VR experience, including “The False Mirror” (1928), “The Treachery of Images” (1929), and “La Magie Noir” (1935).

The experience was created by BDH Immersive and took over six months of design and animation to complete. An original score was created by Timo Baker.

You can watch a trailer for the surreal Magritte VR Experience in the video below.

Finally, by downloading the Magritte Experience app, visitors can be led through a 90-minute tour of Knokke to explore the city with the help of Magritte.

The Magritte Experience is open every day through September 3 from 11:00AM – 6:00PM.

Ticket prices: €14.95 for adults, €12.95 for children/students/seniors. Children under the age of 6 can enter for free.
