VIDEO: First trailer for “Star Trek Discovery” TV series reveals new aliens, new ship, and a new crew

Subspace communications, today, received the first real peek at CBS/Paramount’s new Star Trek spinoff: “Star Trek Discovery.”

Exciting new looks at the crew, new aliens, old aliens with a new look and the USS Discovery were revealed in the two and a half minute clip.  This new Star Trek series is set ten years before the epic adventures of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the crew of the “USS Enterprise.”

In the trailer we encounter the crew and what appears to be a Klingon death ritual.  Spock’s father, played by James Frain also appears to play a major role in the show.  He’s seen mentoring first officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). Character actor Doug Jones (“Hellboy” and “Pan’s Labyrinth”) is seen as alien crew member Lt. Saru.  Not seen in the trailer is Jason Isaacs (Captain Lorca).

Fans of the franchise should recognize the name Harry Mudd.  The interstellar ‘entrepreneur’ will be brought to life for nine episodes by Riann Wilson (“The Office”).

In this first trailer for the new series the Klingons are back.  Here, a Klingon Death Ritual seems be taking place, complete with Death Scream warning the dead of another warrior’s arrival:

“Star Trek Discovery” will premiere on CBS television this fall for one episode only.  After that the remaining episodes will be available on CBS’ on demand service, CBS All Access.  The first season has been expanded from 13 episodes to 15.
