Disney’s live-action “Mulan” to ditch songs in favor of “muscular” action

According to the director of the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney’s “Mulan,” the film will not have any songs written into its script.

Director Niko Caro has been quoted in her recent MovieFone interview as saying, “No songs right now, much to the horror of my children.” Instead she relayed that the film would be “muscular” and a “girly martial arts epic,” implying that the feature film would lean more in the direction of an action movie.

This is somewhat of a bold move when films like the live-action adaptations of “Beauty and the Beast” and “Cinderella” strayed very little from its source material and has been enthusiastically received as a result.

It is possible that this choice for a song-less “Mulan” might change. With the movie not due until 2018, there is plenty of time to change course (as it already did when it received backlash over a 2016 script leak that indicated a “white” Mulan would be cast).

Update (3/23/17):

In an interview with EW, Disney president of production Sean Bailey said while Mulan is “not currently intended” as a musical, “nothing is off the table.”
