It’s a tale as old as time, but the tale was surprising nonetheless. Kaley didn’t see it coming as she stood on the stage and her boyfriend, Brendan, emerged in costume and got down on one knee to propose.

Kaley had always dreamed of playing Belle in the musical, Beauty and the Beast, and she had finally achieved her goal. It was the final performance for the show, and undoubtedly it was an emotional one as great moments of accomplishment often are. Her boyfriend, Brendan, picked this moment to ask her to be his wife.

He had secretly worked with the directors of the production and rehearsed so that he could replace the Prince in the finale scene. He was ready, approaching his love to perform the final song with her before making a declaration to take care of her for the rest of their lives.

Kaley’s good friend, costume designer David McCarthy, was so moved by the proposal that he asked Kaley and Brendan to permit him to do an engagement shoot. This time they would be dressed in the exquisite theatrical costumes that he had created for a separate production of Beauty and the Beast. The result was breathtaking.

David’s design for the gown was based on a “wedding look” for Belle. Likewise, the Prince’s suit was inspired by the same nuptial concept. This made these fairytale outfits perfect for this real-life romance.

The bodice of Belle’s gown was designed with a floral brocade that sprouted and grew as it approached the neckline. The spiraling vines of rhinestones lead into lace roses and off-the-shoulder sleeves with several different embroidered trims–all with rose motifs.

The skirt was six layers of organza, satin, and a corded fabric over top of floral lace and mesh. The desired effect was a skirt that had layers of gold the closer you looked at it, but upon first glance was ivory.

The Prince’s suit featured a tone on tone white double-breasted waistcoat, cravat with glass crystal brooch, blue velvet and gold trimmed tail coat with an asymmetrical gold brocade cape.
