‘Tis the season to give to others. That’s what Universal Studios Hollywood had in mind when it planned its 12th annual “Day of Giving”, an effort to contribute to battling Southern California’s growing homelessness problem through the Discover a Star Foundation.
Hundreds of Universal employee volunteers banded together to assist in Operation School Bell, helping homeless children acquire shoes, clothing, and school supplies, and in Habitat for Humanity, where volunteers crafted elaborate playhouses to accompany homes built by the organization.
250 children were on hand during the November 10th event, and after receiving their supplies they were treated to a day in the park at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The day-long event also sent hundreds of employee volunteers around Los Angeles to help support community-building efforts at AIDS Project L.A. (APLA), Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Project Angel Food, and Shane’s Inspiration. In a press release from Universal, the company described the Discover a Star Foundation as follows:
Supported by Universal Studios Hollywood, Discover A Star Foundation is committed to making a significant impact in local underserved communities by providing grants to deserving non-profit organizations. Originally founded in 1995, Discover A Star’s mission is to provide financial assistance to neighboring nonprofit groups. To date, Discover A Star Foundation has raised over $8 million and provided financial assistance to over 65 non-profit organizations.
