CBS’ 1960’s comedy, Lost in Space is about to undergo its third reboot thanks to a new Netflix original series. The streaming service has ordered a full first season of episodes based on the science fiction cult classic.

CBS first aired Lost in Space on September 15, 1965. The series would run until 1968 and featured the adventures of the Robinson family (based on the 1962 Gold Key comic The Space Family Robinson), Dr Zachary Smith and The Robot (a class M-3, Model B9 General Utility non-Theorizing Environmental Control Robot) as they attempt to find their way back to Earth after their space ship, the Jupiter 2 is sabotaged by Dr. Smith.

The TV show actually had higher ratings than Star Trek at the time but like Trek, it was cancelled after the third season. None other than John Williams wrote the catchy theme song.

Lost in Space enjoyed two re-boots. The first of which was a 1972-1973 ABC Cartoon Series (with only Dr. Smith and the Robot returning).  New Line Cinema produced a feature film in 1998 starring Gary Oldman, William Hurt and Matt LeBlanc and included many of the original series actors in cameo appearances.

Netflix’s reboot will use the writing talents of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold) with Zack Estrin (Prison Break) as the showrunner (source Variety). Initial comments about the new series’ plot suggest that the Robinson family will have to deal with other adversities than Dr. Smith as Netflix indicates the family will be ‘battling strange new alien environment and their own personal demons’ (endgadget)

“The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience. The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president, according to EW.

Fans can expect first delivery of the series episodes in 2018.
