Second trailer for Marvel’s “Jessica Jones” showcases gritty action

With almost six months until Captain America: Civil War, Marvel fans are clamoring for the news at nearly every turn. Marvel has found a way to take advantage of the excitement awaiting any product they release by utilizing Netflix and binge watching as a way to introduce and tell expansive stories for some of its more unknown characters. The release of Daredevil in April was an unquestioned success, and in just ten days, Marvel’s Jessica Jones will join the party.

Today, Netflix released its second trailer for the new show. Jessica Jones follows the titular character (portrayed by Krysten Ritter) as she reignites a personal struggle with a villain named Kilgrave, a.k.a. “the Purple Man.” Along the way she begins working for Jeryn Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss), starts a romantic relationship with Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and solves crimes within Hell’s Kitchen.

The second trailer of Jessica Jones focuses less on the stakes of Jones’ struggle versus Kilgrave, and more on understanding the characters involved. This includes several scenes showcasing Jones’ diverse power set, including super strength and the highly effective martial art techniques. The trailer establishes her background as a private investigator, showcasing her office, tech, and even a scene of her at a stakeout.

The trailer also provides some more images of both Carrie-Anne Moss and David Tennant. Moss is featured more prominantly this time around, with several scenes hinting that she may know more about Jones than she lets on. The shot of her looking through the office blinds suggests that Jones may not be the only character with baggage to hide.

The Purple Man also makes several appearances within the trailer, mostly through footage we had already seen. It was a strong choice to directly discuss what his powers entail, namely mind control, so that the audience does not need a learning curve when the show begins. Kilgrave is a unique villain in many ways, and showcasing him tormenting many people including Jones further defines his role in the series. Perhaps the most important shot of the trailer provides a look at Jones while in the employ of Kilgrave. Who Jones is attacking is unclear, but the way the scene is presented, Jones looks like an enforcer for Kilgrave’s criminal operations. It will be interesting to see Jones’ path as an anti-hero, possibly to the role of flawed hero by the end of the season.

One other thing that should be addressed in this series, is that is might take an even more adult tone than even Daredevil. While Daredevil had its share of violence, there are already many remarks in both trailers about Jones’ issues with substance abuse. Beyond that, we’ve seen several scenes that indicate there will be more sexual content than the standard Marvel fare. For those who like to watch Marvel with their kids, this might not be a show you jump into before screening for content.

I will say that while the first trailer did a lot to excite the fanbase for the show, this trailer does showcase more of Jones’ skillset. Considering that the show is named after her, this is probably a good thing. In doing so, Netflix is reminding the audience that while Jones may not be as well known as even Luke Cage or the Purple Man, her story will not just be bridge to introduce these characters. This is Jones story through and through, and will likely be the most complete for any female super hero.

Marvel’s Jessica Jones premieres on November 20th, 2015. It stars Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Carrie-Anne Moss, Rachel Taylor and David Tennant.
