For most Pixar fans, 2015 has been a landmark year for the company. Not only has Pixar released one of its most critically acclaimed and financially successful movies of the year with Inside Out, but we are only a couple of weeks away from The Good Dinosaur releasing into theaters.  This week, Pixar teased the long awaited sequel, Finding Dory to the delight of many fans. Now, as cries of “just keep swimming” fade away, Pixar is beginning to make headlines surrounding its groundbreaking franchise, Toy Story.

Back in November of 2014, Pixar announced official plans to develop another sequel to the influential franchise. Not only was it announced that John Lasseter would return to the franchise as a director (his first directorial effort since Cars 2 in 2011), but Rashida Jones and Will McCormack would write the script. At D23, we finally received details on what story it would tell, namely a rekindling of the love between Bo Peep, and everyone’s favorite cowboy doll, Woody.

Late last night, news broke at The Wrap that Lasseter is reaching out to bring Academy Award winning actress Patricia Arquette into the franchise. The source contends that Arquette will be voicing a laid back mother, specifically calling her a “hippie” mother. Arquette gained wide acclaim for her performance in 2014’s Boyhood, netting her many accolades including an Oscar for her performance. She’s also well known for her lead turn on the NBC drama “Medium,” as well as her season on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” Adding someone with her background is not overly surprising, with many accomplished actors and actresses openly campaigning to be in Pixar films.

The description of her role is an interesting development for several reasons, namely that it sounds like Arquette will be voicing a human mother. While the franchise has always had humans as characters (Andy and Bonnie), but those characters are normally relegated to the background. While Laurie Metcalf (Rosanne) had a relatively high profile when Toy Story released in 1995, Arquette is riding high on one the greatest accomplishments an actor can receive. If she’s seeking a human part, it could have a much larger part to play then would meet the eye.

On the other hand, there’s a chance that Arquette may be voicing the “mother” of an already existing character, potentially Bo Peep. It would be interesting to add that dynamic to the Toy Story franchise, because up to this point the closest parent/child relationship that’s been introduced is the relationship between Mr. Potato Head and the Green Aliens.  Following a parental relationship between toys would likely be every bit as emotional as one would imagine from Pixar.

Stay tuned to Inside the Magic as we continue to update any casting information for Toy Story 4.

Toy Story 4 is set to release on June 15, 2018. It will be directed by John Lasseter and features several returning actors including Tom Hanks, Joan Cusack and Tim Allen.
