Not to long ago it was announced that a new Mary Poppins movie was in the works with famous director Rob Marshall attached.

The details were quite fuzzy: was it supposed be a sequel or a remake? Rob Marshall spoke to the website Vulture to clarify what we can expect when everyone’s favorite nanny returns to the big screen.

“It is not a new Mary Poppins. P.L. Travers wrote eight books all together. They worked from the first book, and we are working from the other books, not touching the iconic brilliance of Mary Poppins. This is an extension. I’m a huge fan of the original, and I’m a very good friend of Julie Andrews, and I hold it in such awe. There is all this new material — it was the Harry Potter of its time — and they were never turned into anything further than that adventure.”

The new live-action movie will have quite a different feeling compared to its predeccor with the story set in Depression-era London 20 years after the original Disney movie. Songs will still play a big part in this new movie though with songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman on board to compose new original songs.

Some Disney fans are not happy about this new “Mary Poppins” movie and think that the classic should be left alone but Marshall says that Mary Poppins star Julie Andrews herself is looking forward to the upcoming movie.

“She is a very dear friend, and if she could be involved in some way, it would be very special. I know she is very happy that we’re doing it and, after 50 years, feels that it is time.”

No release date has been set for the movie yet.
