At the Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Disney CEO Bob Iger made the surprise announcement that Shanghai Disneyland will feature a new version of the classic Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle of the Sunken Treasure will prominently feature characters and settings from the 4-movie film franchise inspired by the theme park attraction. It willinclude Captain Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones as main characters, but also likely to feature many of the supporting roles missing from the rest of the Pirates rides worldwide.

The new ride will be a prominent feature of the park’s newly-announced Treasure Cove land, entirely themed to the Pirates franchise:

Iger called the upcoming Shanghai attraction a “one-of-a-kind experience that would appeal to our Chinese guests.” Sources indicate the ride may include new technologies such as pivoting boats and a creative uses of projections.

The area will include a full scale pirate ship, boats guests can paddle, and other Pirates-inspired elements along with the attraction itself.

Construction progress on the new Pirates ride was also shared:

Shanghai Disney Resort is scheduled to open by the end of 2015.
