The 86th Academy Awards Nominations were announced this morning with Disney receiving six nominations for three feature films and one short:

Animated Feature Film – “Frozen”
Music – Original Song – “Let It Go” from “Frozen”
Short Film – Animated – “Get a Horse!”
Music – Original Score – “Saving Mr. Banks”
Makeup and Hairstyling – “The Lone Ranger”
Visual Effects – “The Lone Ranger”

Also part of Disney’s movie empire are Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” and Disney’s United States distribution of “The Wind Rises,” each nominated for one award.

Visual Effects – “Iron Man 3”
Animated Feature Film – “The Wind Rises”

While “Frozen” received two nominations and its attached short film “Get a Horse!” is also recognized, Pixar is surprisingly shut out of the Oscar race with “Monsters University” not nominated for any awards. “Frozen” is up against “The Croods,” “Despicable Me 2,” “Ernest & Celestine,” and “The Wind Rises” for the big prize.

Disney did not receive any acting nominations, with neither Tom Hanks nor Emma Thompson being included for “Saving Mr. Banks” – a highly praised film that earned just one nomination for its music.

It’s unlikely anyone would have guessed that the film flop “The Lone Ranger” would receive more Oscar nominations than a Pixar movie.

The Academy Awards will be aired on ABC on March 2, 2014 at 4pm ET.
