Review: “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” and “Winnie the Pooh – A Very Merry Pooh Year” bring high-def to the holidays

A double dose of Disney Christmas entertainment recently received high-definition digital makeovers just in time for the holiday season. On this Christmas Eve, both are perfect for adding some extra cheer to the night before Santa arrives.

Mickey’s Christmas Carol

Among the best of Christmas time entertainment anywhere, “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” turns 30 years old, retelling the classic Charles Dickens tale with a few favorite characters, starring Mickey Mouse and Scrooge McDuck along with a series of fun versions of the tale’s famous ghosts. On Blu-ray, “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” looks and sounds better than ever, a must watch every December.

Adding to the festive entertainment are several shorts, also among Disney’s best holiday entertainment, including “Pluto’s Christmas Tree.” Not all of the shorts are quite as memorable, with some oddities like “Corn Chips,” but the new release is rather inclusive, even featuring one of the newest Mickey Mouse shorts, “Yodelberg.”

Disney Intermission (appearing when the Blu-ray is paused) also adds a few Christmas sing-alongs, rounding out a release full of Christmas enjoyment.

Winnie the Pooh – A Very Merry Pooh Year

You’ve got to be a big Pooh fan to fully enjoy this release, definitely not a must-see classic like “Mickey’s Christmas Carol.” Though Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and the rest of the gang are always entertaining, their entry into Disney’s Christmas history isn’t quite as gratifying. The Blu-ray release looks good, as it should considering “A Very Merry Pooh Year” is only 11 years old. This roughly 1-hour “adventure” is likely to easily appeal to those who adore these characters, but the average viewer may not watch this one year after year. Included as a bonus feature is some mildly entertaining Disney Intermission.

Mickey’s Christmas Carol” and “Winnie the Pooh – A Very Merry Pooh Year” are available now on Amazon and major retailers.
