Trading cards trigger magic spells as Disney begins play testing Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom interactive experience

Average theme park guests will soon do battle with famous Disney villains casting spells throughout the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World – using trading cards. Disney has begun “play testing” their new Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom interactive experience, offering a first look at how it will function when it debuts next year.

Those roaming through Adventureland in the coming days may notice a select group of Disney cast members creating some extra magic throughout the themed land. In the game, an ordinary fireplace becomes extraordinary as a familiar evil character from The Lion King is put in his place by simply holding up a special trading card, representing a magic spell, with specific attributes to help aid players in their quest to defeat the villains aimed at taking over the park.

When Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is activated for all in 2012, guests will search for “magic symbols” to find villains’ hidden throughout the park, using a variety of cards to do battle with them. Characters featured in the experience include Stitch, Yzma, Kronk, and Scar, amongst many others.

And today the Disney Parks Blog gives us a first look at one of the trading cards that will serve as a weapon to thwart evildoers:

Upon reading of these trading cards being part of the game, many have assumed Disney will charge a premium to play. But fear not, as the Disney Parks Blog emphasizes that Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom “will be included in park admission.” So it will not cost anything extra to enjoy.

Interactive elements have been added, but hidden, throughout the Magic Kingdom, awaiting activation next year.
